Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

I don’t like it when people try to glamourise their names
eg
Susan becomes Suezayne or Susainn
Diane become Diahann
Michelle become Michaele

For some reason I have an aversion to the name Jack. It is not the name per se
it is because I know three people with the name and all of them are awful.

I worked with a Jackie who became Jacqué overnight 🤣

Olive - so frumpy and drab.
Wren, I don’t understand the love for this. It’s a bird, why not seagull or pigeon.

Jayden/Kayden/Brayden

McKenna or MacKenzie for girls. They’re surnames and not nice first names either.

Anything with an apostrophe in the middle. WTAF is that about?? Hmm

Yes Olive! What is this Olive thing about?! It's not even a nice word, it's so ugly 😬 I know the most beautiful little girl named Olive and I find it jarring every time I hear her name, I can't believe her parents thought that was the nicest name going.

BellePeppa · 08/01/2023 07:49

I’ve never like the name Hazel, it’s so dull and plain to me. I was quite shocked when Julia Roberts named her daughter it. Cannot stand the name Evie, I like Eve but Evie just makes me think of spoilt princessy types with mothers who wear gilets and Hunters wellies, drive their kids to school in a 4x4 and are called Annabelle (a name which I actually do like)

"The risk" - sorry but that is so unnecessarily dramatic Grin

Id like to think my children have more going for them in regards to individuality (for example, personality traits, likes/dislikes, hobbies, beliefs) than just their name making them stand out.

I have a friend who changed her name legally to a bog standard (by MN opinion) name because her parents wanted something "unique" and she was bullied mercilessly throughout school because of it. She now happily shares a name with 2 others in her workplace and it has never caused an issue once!

Sometimes it's more the parents wanting to appear cool and unique and pretending it's for the child's benefit.

I have a stupid, 'unique' name that I genuinely find embarrassing when applying got jobs etc. I wouldn't do that to my child. BUT I would also never give my child a top 100 name. Creates its own issues. There's a huge middle ground full of normal names that give you your own identity without embarrassing you. 100-400 in the charts is a good place to look.

@Bangolads stupid is a bit harsh! Names bring up feelings about past associations, good and bad. Yes obviously every individual is different but you might at first have a slight aversion to someone with the same name as the school bully that made your life a misery.

valleyplaza · 08/01/2023 11:14

Jagger/ Bowie

AllyCatTown · 08/01/2023 12:05

I think it’s fine not to like a name or to think it’d cause issues where you live but I think it just comes across as ignorant to call established/traditional names as ridiculous or made up.

ILoveCats89 · 08/01/2023 12:15

Caleb not sure why. My autocorrect likes to change it to camel so im sure that doesn't help 😂😂

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/01/2023 12:20

Harriet, Winifred

Wilfred, Rupert,

all such dusty, fusty, ugly names to me.

User1706 · 08/01/2023 12:26

Laura, James (both boring) anything doubled barreled and anything mum/dad made up or has an usually difficult spelling for no reason.

DOCTORCEE · 08/01/2023 12:37

Amelia and Amy

GyozaGuiting · 08/01/2023 16:03

Cannot stand Jayden or Kayden, any surnames as first names (McKenzie, Mason, Carter), and anything with Mae in it.

overthinkersanonnymus · 08/01/2023 18:44

I hate the name Matthew. It reminds me of a pale, snot nosed, whining brat

I also hate Ian or Simon 🤢

For girls I hate the may/Mae thing or anything "Ella" related. Ie isabella, Ana Bella, isla etc

Or and eve/evie

overthinkersanonnymus · 08/01/2023 18:49

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 02/01/2023 07:12

Agree on anything hyphenated. No.
Also, I hate the name Seren.

Aww I love the name seren

TheOGCCL · 08/01/2023 18:52

Anything Bella or Belle related for a girl, just far too girly. Particularly dislike Bella.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 08/01/2023 19:25

River
Austin
Harrison
Miller

VickerishAllsort · 09/01/2023 12:35

It's not that I dislike it, but only dogs should be called Oscar.

Rebeljustforkicks · 02/01/2023 03:27

Well one of my DC names are on here, as usual.
But it's the first time I've seen mine on one of these threads....I'm offended😁

I don't like the name Sarah, it's so bland!

I agree. It's my name.

AngelicaSchuylerAndHerSisters · 09/01/2023 18:59

I have two which may offend people since they have been very popular. But Katie and Jennifer really irritate me for some reason.

mathanxiety · 09/01/2023 20:08

Imogen

Champsandbubbles · 09/01/2023 21:40

Rory 🤢

Hunter2501 · 14/01/2023 23:37

Ophelia - just doesn’t roll of the tongue well

Cocopops78 · 17/01/2023 19:28

Hepzibah or whatever wtf

BellePeppa · 17/01/2023 20:33

I’ve never liked the name Martha. I didn’t like it when I was young and I still don’t like it now I’m older. No particular reason it just doesn’t sound nice to me.
