Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

Ugh. I wince when I hear Freya.

ladygindiva · 04/01/2023 20:31

I like Freya but I would never have predicted it would become such a favourite.

hlc123 · 05/01/2023 12:08

Ian, reuben
Morag, Alicia, Eve

aintitfun · 05/01/2023 14:47

Molly and George, so wet sounding

Mummytobe333 · 05/01/2023 14:53

Clementine 🤮

Clementine 🤮

Yes. Especially when shortened to 'Clemmie'. I don't know why but it reminds me of an STI - like Chlamydia Confused

I dislike harsh discordant sounding names.
I think top is Gertrude.
And for boys Archibald, Archie. Sounds like nails on a chalk board.

I can't imagine there would be many Archibald's and Gertrude's in the last 50 years. They're awful

They really are awful.

I don't know any Gertrudes but have heard of quite a few young Archibalds/Archies Shock

SemperIdem · 05/01/2023 23:54

I absolutely detest Jack and Ottilie.

Flopsy145 · 06/01/2023 06:48

Amelia. I just knew a pretentious kid with that name and can't stand it now

Sparklycarrot · 06/01/2023 18:38

I hate the name Helen. It is probably a perfectly lovely name but every Helen I've ever known has always been a complete bitch. Ditto Georgia. Both the names Helen and Georgia make me shudder, ( apologies to any nice Helen's and Georgia's out there !)

TheaBrandt · 06/01/2023 19:16

Every Jacqui I have ever known has been a complete bitch

custardcream1000 · 07/01/2023 09:15

I don't really have any names I strongly dislike, but there are names I would never choose.

Poppy, Grace, Zoe, Rosie, Ivy, Eve/Evie, Elodie, Eleanor, Isabel/isabella, Summer, Autumn, Sunday, Wednesday, Lyra, Mabel, Kitty.

I like the name Elodie when it's pronounced with a French accent, but when English people say the name it always sounds like they are saying hello to someone named D and dropping the H to me.

Dominic, Hugo, Jude, Benson, Oakley, Teddy, Phoenix, Bear.

Loosestrife22 · 07/01/2023 09:31

I cannot stand the names Alice or Hugo. For me there is nothing remotely likeable about them. Cannot fathom why on earth anyone would choose them for their kiddos. Can't pinpoint why - just not my cup of tea.

I expect parents of Hugos and Alices will be saying the exact same thing about my kiddos names!

Cattenberg · 07/01/2023 09:37

Aww, Alice and Hugo were a sweet couple (albeit not the brightest).

HoldingTheDoor · 07/01/2023 15:47

Frank/Frankie. It's such an incredibly harsh and ugly sounding name. I can't understand the appeal at all or how anyone could look at a lovely newborn and think it appropriate to call him Frank. It's a family name for me but one that I'm happy to let die.

I can't stand the name Esme I don't know why though!

Me too! It makes me feel icky.

I've always hated Hannah and Sophie - the epitome of boring names from my childhood. Also any name with a 'y' in place of an 'i' - Madyson, Caitlyn etc.

Bangolads · 07/01/2023 22:59

Peter, Tim, Keith- worst boy band ever

Bangolads · 07/01/2023 23:02

@clareth disliking names doesn’t make you ‘snooty’ it’s just your preference. If you made decisions about the individuals or their parents based on those names then that would be something else - stupid springs to mind.

Wetblanket78 · 07/01/2023 23:02

Layton, Clayton, Also hate different spellings to the traditional. I came across a Brad-Lee he goes by Brad. Girls Katie too sweet and little girly. Anything that sounds made up. Kianna, Tianna, middle names Mae or mai. Another rediculous boys name I heard is Killian. Who would want kill at the start of they're name?

Smokeyrobinson · 07/01/2023 23:11

Phoebe
Oliver
Rose
Ben

Mumwithapub · 08/01/2023 01:56

Caleb, makes the parents sound thick as shit if they pronounce it a certain way. I'm not fond of surnames used as a first name either.

Ponoka7 · 08/01/2023 06:58

People are free to dislike what they want, but to declare old Arabic/Hebrew names as modern or names as 'spelt wrong' just shows how thick you are. At least Google the background of the name you are making statements about. All names are made up and 'spelt wrong', we've anglicised the originals and as such have spelt them wrong.

Ponoka7 · 08/01/2023 07:00

One thing that's changed though is there's been a lot less racism on these types of threads as there was a few years ago.
