Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

Woody

I hate most of the 'ey' names. Like Kiley, Marley, Ainsley, Kinsey etc. The super trendy names of the past 15 years or so. And I hate names that are objects like "Apple", "Treasure", "Pilot" etc. And for some reason I hate the name Jennifer.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 02/01/2023 19:08

I have an irrational dislike of some very normal names. Hannah. Francesca. Kirsty. Amy. I can’t explain it as they are nice names, I just have an aversion to them. I must have negative associations from childhood or something.

I really don’t like the current American trend of -ley and -tyn/-ton names, often involving the letter Z, like ‘Brixley’ and ‘Laketyn’ and ‘Daxton’

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 02/01/2023 19:08

*letter X, obviously. Though I’m sure some involve Z.

Sunnytwobridges · 02/01/2023 19:13

And I hate the names George, Edward, Louis, Arthur, Isla, Freya Maisie, Elanor. Ugh makes my skin crawl.

I'm sure there are others lol

Jude, bleurgh.

Girls - Amelia, Bethany, Nevaeh

Boys - Brandon, Ezra, Mason

SellFridges · 02/01/2023 19:24

It’s the really popular ones for me. Why call your kid Jack or Oliver or Olivia or Isabel? You’re not discerning them from the crowd at all, and they’ll be forever saddled with needing a letter or a surname as well. Bizarre.

I also dislike George and Henry - really insipid.

It’s not always the case. There are 2 Olivia’s in my DDs whole school yet she has 2 Romans in her class. No Oliver and no Jack in her class.

Infact, of my 3 children, only 1 of them has a child named Oliver in their class.

MonkeyPuddle · 02/01/2023 19:34

Me, DP, both my kids but not DSD’s names have been mentioned on this thread 😂

As many others the Jayden etc names.
For no particular reason I really dislike Peter.

SellFridges · 02/01/2023 19:35

Agree, it’s not always the case. Neither of my kids have had an Olivia in their classes, nor have come across one in extra curricular stuff. Must just mean there are 5 in another school.

Point still stands though. I find it strange that people choose super popular names knowing the risk.

BabyFour2023 · 02/01/2023 19:39

What’s risky about it though? It’s a child’s name. Nobody is going to be hurt or killed.

I've said this lots of times but I'll do it again. I have an Isabel, the only one in her class, year, and only one other in the entire primary school of 400 odd kids. None in wider family or friendship group. Three Esme's in her year, three Willows in the school, several Bodhi's and Noah's in acquaintance circle.

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2023 19:46

Loads of Isabels here. Three of our friends have them there is usually one in most friendship groups. Eve/Isabel/Lily/Grace/Olivia are the most frequently used names - have two girls at a girls secondary school

Agree with this. I know plenty of people who carefully chose an unusual name only to find it was the surprise hit name of the year and there were three in their class (my best friend has an Arthur picked exactly like this- in fact she spent quite a long time fretting about it being too “out there”).

Better to choose a name because you love it, then it doesn’t matter how common it is, as it’s the name you love.

And the most ignorant post of the thread goes to...

Irish is a language, not a bizarre concoctions of letters.

Christ almighty 🤣
Well there goes ALL my DCs names and my DH too. @amitoooldforthisshit probably didn't mean to sound racist.
🤔

I don’t like the surname type names. I just don’t find them cute at all. Grayson, Hudson, Jackson, Carter. Not cute on a baby and not handsome on a man. I also hate Hunter! Sounds so violent.

For girls I’ve never liked Sophie or Emily. So so overused and feel so boring.

I’m afraid to say this was us with DS’ name! We picked a name that we thought was traditional but not popular. I’m a teacher and had never taught a single child with that name or met anyone with the name my entire life, DH had never met anyone with the name, nor had any of our family members expect for my DSis, who had met one person. Since our son was born 3.5 years ago, I’ve met 3-4 other boys with the same name and another 3-4 with very similar names at various play groups/days out so all of a similar age. 🤦🏻‍♀️

DS (so far) hasn’t had another child with the same name in his class at nursery and I’m hoping he’ll not have any in his class when he starts school this year, but I’m not sure 😭

I had a ‘popular’ name growing up and always had 3 or so others in my class/workplace etc. at any one time. I wanted to avoid this for DS so I’m of course disappointed but you can’t predict what names will be a hit all of a sudden, I suppose.

Currently pregnant with #2 and want something that suits but is slightly less popular.

Lelophants · 02/01/2023 20:40

I know it sounds silly but I find it weird when people my age are calling kids the names of their old classmates. Whether I like people or not, I associate it with them and find it weird.

An old school friend called her daughter Isobel and there were about 4 in our year and she really disliked one of them! I don’t mind the name Isobel itself (although prefer the French spelling) but I hate the nickname Izzy! It’s the same with Catherine. Don’t mind it but don’t like the nicknames. Same again with Elizabeth. Not a bad name in itself but can’t do Lizzy.

Newnamenewname109870 · 02/01/2023 20:42

Wayne sounds so whiney!

I don’t get Blanche or Sloane.

Cuppasoupmonster · 02/01/2023 20:42

The pretentious French names for English kids, like Etienne and Elodie.

BiscuitLover3678 · 02/01/2023 20:43

I struggle to think of a bake starting with K that I like!

AllyCatTown · 02/01/2023 20:45

I’m put off popular names but I do think people saying the child will always be known as Olivia B etc aren’t taking into consideration that things aren’t like when they were a child. There’s a lot more diversity in names now so it’s much less common to have so many duplicate names in classes and friendship groups.
