My English isn't very good, so please bear with me.

I’m Korean and my family moved to UK. My daughter is going to study at secondary school.

Her name is Minji, which is very common in Korea, but I am worried that she will be teased in English. I didn't even know the word "minge" existed.

Is it a problem if I change the spelling to Minzy? It's the same pronunciation in Korean.

Mia - heard it too much common
Gia - can struggle with how to pronounce it
Jia - it sounds like Chinese characters
Jiya - heard it's Indian name

She can name herself in English and if she wants, she can write her Korean name as it is. My daughter picked some English names, but most of them are celebrities or movie names.😂

I heard some names are class-oriented or race-oriented. So I want to narrow it down even if she choose. And I hope it's a name that can be used anywhere in the world.

Thank you.
Wish you all the best in the coming year.

@FurAndFeathers You misunderstand — I meant I was unaware until I read a post on this thread.
I fail to see why you are so aggressive in your responses. Not all posters are aware of all issues, most are trying to be helpful to the OP.
You have added to my, and probably others, education.
Like many, I have health issues and am not as abreast of the news as I once was and attempting to hit me over the head with a mallet makes few friends. I have Scottish friends and have admired the Scottish culture and have not deliberately insulted it.

Probably because it’s not my job to educate you, and you seem unnecessarily self-important - you can’t be bothered to read earlier posts on the thread, you keep derailing the thread with your posts and questions that are irrelevant to the OP, and you keep announcing your categorising of Scots as a dialect or language as if your opinion is some kind expert opinion, when it’s very clear you know very little about it.

And now you’re calling me names.

but that’s ok cos you aren’t trying to be deliberately insulting.

🙄

Min

I know a couple (various full names, it’s just a nick name)

Or Minnie to start if she’s little

As seen on this thread slang terms can be quite location specific so if you can might be worth asking someone from the area you're planning to move to, ideally someone who is or can check with a teenager, who will be able to give you a sense of the likely reaction to different names. I'd add that spelling it differently isn't necessarily going to help - Minzi is lovely but if the way it's pronounced is too close to minge then kids will almost certainly react the same way.

Mindy would strike a chord with teen girls as it’s the name of character in Emily in Paris, which is very popular at the moment. The actress who plays her (Ashley Park) is Korean-American, although the character is Chinese.

Mitzi can be pronounced Mitza is nice.

Whatwhatwhatnow · 04/01/2023 08:31

I would shorten it to Min. I know several Asian women called that.

CatJumperTwat · 04/01/2023 19:18

I just happened to watch a programme with a woman named Minji and now I've heard it pronounced, I think you might be worrying too much. With the stress on the Ji it wouldn't make me think minge.

it’s a lovely name and reflects your heritage. I wouldn’t change it.

if you want to anglicise I’d go with Minnie as a nickname. Or GiGi, that’s getting quite popular as a nn.

Agree. You shouldn’t change it in my opinion.
Minnie or JiJi/GiGi for her nickname.
