I love it and a classic but seen as dull it seems (?)

A lovely classic name that is surely due a resurgence.

I know two people called Helen, one is 62 and another is 29.

Cakecakecheese · 21/12/2022 16:38

It is a bit I suppose but I really like boring names! It's classic but not massively popular these days so she wouldn't have many in her class with the same name.

postcardpuffin · 21/12/2022 16:44

I think it’s great - classic, understated, not frilly or fussy, but a strong name with plenty of history. Go for it!

Another variant that’s equally lovely and very Shakespearean, is Helena. (I know a couple of Helenas who really like their names - it’s unusual enough that there’s rarely another in the same class/school, but it’s very classic and elegant).

Riverlee · 21/12/2022 16:45

I was going to suggest Helena as well as an alternative.

toastofthetown · 21/12/2022 16:45

Too boring is subjective. Personally it’s too boring for my tastes but that’s just my opinion and I don’t assume that’s objectively correct. If every had the same view on names we wouldn’t need this board! There’s nothing objectively problematic with the name Helen, though I much prefer the similar Helena.

SnitterBug · 21/12/2022 16:49

Helena which can be shortened to Helen

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 16:49

Oh I love it! Not heard it for a while but everyone knows it.

MusicstillonMTV · 21/12/2022 16:53

I like it - good nickname potential too, El or Nell or others but equally works as a full name

Fivebeanchilli · 21/12/2022 16:56

I'm not sure it's boring; it's just dated. It feels very 60s/70s in the same way as Sarah or Susan does.
Helena feels fresher because it's never had that huge popularity and therefore has always been a fairly unusual but recognisable name.
I love Helena. I don't dislike Helen but it's just not as pretty in my eyes (I also love Louisa but not Louise and Susannah but not Susan).

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 21/12/2022 16:58

Helena is much prettier.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/12/2022 16:58

Classic and boring is good! I'd rather be memorable for what I do and say than a stand out name. Regardless of what this board thinks, there is a lot more to people than their name.

Just beware if your local accent would pronounce "Helen" as "Ellen". And there's the "Heluhn"/"Helin" quandary (I'm the first one).

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 17:00

I think its classy

Daisy62 · 21/12/2022 17:00

Love it. I think it suits any age.

RoseMartha · 21/12/2022 17:04

I also prefer Helena

katis · 21/12/2022 17:05

Really hate the name Helen it's a Middle Aged woman's name. Helena is much nicer

SayMyNameProperly · 21/12/2022 17:05

It is classy and classic but a bit dull IMO. Helena has just a little something extra (the a!) that makes it a more special name.

Floralnomad · 21/12/2022 17:05

Helena , nn Nell is lovely

Lucia574 · 21/12/2022 17:06

It’s beautiful and elegant. I much prefer classic, simple names.

KirstenBlest · 21/12/2022 17:06

It's lovely and a classic.

Helena is nice but they tend to be called Ellie or Ella around here and it's too similar to Eleanor

PeaceJoySleep · 21/12/2022 17:08

I like it.

AndcI prefer it to Helena which confuses me. HELLenna or HellENNA or Heleeena
Helen is beautifully simple

Coxspurplepippin · 21/12/2022 17:08

Classic, elegant, spellable, pronounceable.

Katis, Helena is lovely but pronunciation can be a bit of a hazard. I'd pronounce it Helen with a short a at the end but DMil was a Helena pronounced Heleena with the stress on the second syllable.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 21/12/2022 17:08

Not to my taste, but I really like the diminutives* Elena, Ellen, and Nell.

*may not be the correct word 🤔

Coxspurplepippin · 21/12/2022 17:09

X post!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 21/12/2022 17:11

Lovely and classic, so will date less than an on-trend name.

Notonyournellykelly · 21/12/2022 17:15

I like Helen and also Helena, Ellen and Eleanor
