I love it and a classic but seen as dull it seems (?)

I like it. I might be biased though.

RuthW · 21/12/2022 17:15

It's fine if you like it. I never have.

Choccolatte · 21/12/2022 17:16

Always found it dull and not a nice sound.

Pterrydactyl · 21/12/2022 17:23

I like it. Unless you live somewhere where people drop their ‘h’s and it turns into Ellen!

I’m never quite sure how you’re meant to pronounce Helena.

mumonherphone · 21/12/2022 17:24

I prefer Helena too. I know one nicknamed Laney. Also know a little girl called Hayley and one called Elena.

Cas112 · 21/12/2022 17:25

I can see it becoming the type of name to come back into fashion

I think it's cute

electricmoccasins · 21/12/2022 17:26

Love Helen. Reminds me of Howards End. x

ChristmasJingleBalls · 21/12/2022 17:27

Sorry but I think it’s dull.

Helenhere · 21/12/2022 17:27

Checking

StephanieSuperpowers · 21/12/2022 17:28

I like it. It's quite elegant.

I met a baby Hazel lately and I thought it was also surprisingly nice. Haven't met a Hazel since I was at school

Helenhere · 21/12/2022 17:29

Name changed for this - I’m a Helen. I really like my name, classic, easy to spell and pronounce. I don’t like Helena though, it sounds clunky.

Kanaloa · 21/12/2022 17:30

It’s pretty. I’ve met a few kids named Lois & Mabel & Margot & Ivy recently - these more simple, classic, elegant names are about to come back in, with the more ‘pretty’ and frilly Ariana/Olivia/Eliana/Liliana type names falling out.

Yika · 21/12/2022 17:30

Very classic, elegant. I would have said it was dull when I was young but I think these simpler less frilly names that were popular in the 60s and 70s are due a revival.
I actually prefer Helena (pronounced Helen-uh) or Ellen but they are all nice.
Makes me think of Helen of Troy.

TidyDancer · 21/12/2022 17:30

It's okay but yeah a bit boring. Inoffensive though. I like it but don't love it.

Helena is much prettier. Feels elegant and classic.

Krakenwakes · 21/12/2022 17:32

I like it. It’s fresher, simpler and more ahead of the curve than Helena, which I also like.

winonarose · 21/12/2022 17:32

I know of a Helen my age (25). It's also my granny's name and I would use it as a middle name for my newborn daughter if her first name didn't end in an N as well. I like the name x

scottishnames · 21/12/2022 18:01

I like both Helen and Helena.
As earlier poster has said, Ellen is another version, though I prefer the ones with an initial 'H'.

But to those saying Helena sounds new, it was really, really popular in the late 19th cent (after one of Queen Victoria's daughters). She was very go-ahead for her time - her interests included many charities (she was one of the early supporters of the Red Cross) but also nursing, science and technology, and traditional women's arts.

iknowhimsowell · 21/12/2022 19:01

I was one of three Helens in my class at school and there are a lot my age at work now too. I'm 42. I have never ever been called Nellie or Ell. Helen isnt really a name that can be shortened ( although I get called H or Hels by my friends!) I'm biased but I do think it's a nice name although I prefer Ellen or Eleanor.

Appalonia · 21/12/2022 19:09

Helen is a beautiful, classic name. Is def due a resurgence IMO!

Oakbeam · 21/12/2022 19:11

Love it.

Wakk · 21/12/2022 19:12

Yes it is imo.

20viona · 21/12/2022 19:16

Awful

miltonj · 21/12/2022 19:23

It's not boring at all because it's not common. It's nice to hear these names on little ones.

Squamata · 21/12/2022 19:26

I like it.

I think Elaine is another variant but maybe a bit dated!

WaltzingWaters · 21/12/2022 19:27

Not a fan. But then I worked with an awful Helen once so my view is clouded. And my view doesn’t matter anyway! If you love it go for it.
