I love it and a classic but seen as dull it seems (?)

I personally find it a very boring name. But boring 1950s names will be a hot trend soon enough. Names like Helen and Peter and Jane and Alan. Not for me though.

Farmageddon · 21/12/2022 20:01

You could try Eleni which is (I think) the Greek variation of Helen.

JamSandle · 21/12/2022 20:02

I like Helena moreso than Helen.

shreddies · 21/12/2022 20:03

Lovely name

crimsonpeak · 21/12/2022 20:05

Dull. Helena is much better imho.

Lightsbonaza · 21/12/2022 20:07

Yes

TenThousandSpoons · 21/12/2022 20:10

Both the Helens I know are lovely.

Beautiful, strong, classic name. Due a comeback.

Helena I don’t like as much and the different pronunciations make it difficult.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/12/2022 22:59

Helen's pleasant enough and I love it's Ancient Greek mythological heritage- it's just that it feels a bit middle aged/older lady currently (I've met a fair few over the years and none have been younger than about 40). Having said that, it's nice and simple and I can see it making a comeback sooner or later along with similar "plain" names like Jane, Ruth, Mary, Frances etc.

But I must admit that despite the pronunciation issues I'd go for Helena instead as its far more timeless - in that it's never been super popular so you couldn't guess how old one is, plus it has an extra Shakespearean elegance to boot (he used it twice for main characters).

I was one of three Helens in my class at school and there are a lot my age at work now too. I'm 42. I have never ever been called Nellie or Ell. Helen isnt really a name that can be shortened ( although I get called H or Hels by my friends!) I'm biased but I do think it's a nice name although I prefer Ellen or Eleanor.

I could have written this - even same age. Hate it if someone calls me hell but don’t mind Hels so much. Actually think it’s a really ugly name and I would prefer to be called something prettier!

Slipperjangle · 21/12/2022 23:46

I'm a Helen (name changed for this) and love my name. I also live in a place that generally drops the 'h' but people don't tend to with my name. I am middle aged but my daughter in her teens went to school with a Helen.

I think that now we've had the resurgence of names like George and Harry etc that were the names of my grandparents era, it may be the turns of the Helen's, Sarah's, Samantha's etc.

Firebird83 · 21/12/2022 23:53

I prefer Helena, which is one of my favourite girls names.

SunflowerSmith · 22/12/2022 00:03

I'm mid 40's and know lots of Helens my age, they all seem to get called Hel or 'elen.

It is a nice name though.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 22/12/2022 00:07

Helen is elegant & traditional. Love it . I have a cousin in Canada called Helene ( pronounced Hell ene )

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/12/2022 00:41

One of my dearest friends is a Helen. She's an amazing human. Indeed every Helen I've ever known has been lovely. It would be good to see this name have a resurgence. Go for it.

NooneKnowsWhatItsLike · 22/12/2022 00:44

IMO it’s a completely uninspiring name.

Helen Daniels comes to mind.

MamboJamboWambo · 22/12/2022 00:46

I don't think it's dull. It's a very late 80's/90's name though. A bit like Jennifer. I'm not keen on the name personally as Helen was the school bully.

ditherydotty · 22/12/2022 00:46

Like it but prefer Ellen

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2022 00:56

It's a beautiful, classy, elegant name. I prefer it to the 'prettier' Helena.

And I much prefer it to the seriously frumpy Ellen.

VenusClapTrap · 22/12/2022 08:13

I love it. Dd was nearly a Helena. I prefer it without the ‘a’ on the end now as there are so many Eleanors around (with various spellings) and Ellies. Plus I prefer shorter, stronger names that are less likely to be shortened.

BabyFour2023 · 22/12/2022 08:14

For me, yes. It’s the female Simon. Dull, bland and a bit wet.

tweedlee · 22/12/2022 08:17

Lovely name. I only know 2 Helen's - 1 in her 40s and 1 30s. Go for it!

Flammkuchen · 22/12/2022 08:20

DD has a friend who uses her middle name as Helen is a ‘mum’s name’. So nice but dated

HelsyQ · 22/12/2022 08:21

I really don’t like the name Helena, Helen is an old ladies name.

Iamthewombat · 22/12/2022 08:22

katis · 21/12/2022 17:05

Really hate the name Helen it's a Middle Aged woman's name. Helena is much nicer

You must hate a lot of names, then, because there are a lot of middle-aged women around.

Is it? Genuine question - I'm of that generation myself. I know approximately 10 million Sarahs, but only a couple of Helens of my age. I'd say it's a name that I wouldn't associate with any particular age group.
