Help!

We are expecting our second child, Irish living in London. Our daughter has an Irish name and we are keen to give DS one too. But we can't find a single one we like or haven't had to rule out. I've googled and googled, need some serious inspiration!

Can't use the below for various reasons:
Sean
Oisin
Niall
Seamus
Conor
Liam
Ruairi
Fionn

Considering but not loving:
Tadhg
Conan

I worked with an Eoin who'd put his hands in his pockets and fiddle with his balls. Put me off the name I must say.

Roaring again 😂 😂

And never once have I associated the once lovely name Ronan with RK but thanks, now I will 😂

Mummyeyes · 27/11/2022 21:33

Also hadn’t heard of Cahir or Cashel as names! I suppose place names are far game…
Cahir is Cathaír or Cathaoir. It's a name. I've not heard it either but it's listed in "Irish Names" by Donnchadh Ó Corráin and Fidelma Maguire. They say it was widely used historically.
Cashel I have heard as a girl's name, spelt Caiseal, and I know a Kassel nn for Kathleen.

I love Macdara.

Khix · 27/11/2022 21:33

Love Tadhg!

It's surely not cathaoir 😂 but yes, it's Cathair, meaning city, Cahir was once a bustling and important trading centre (believe it or not!)

mikado1 · 27/11/2022 21:50

Macdara is super cool 😎

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 27/11/2022 21:50

Oran?

mikado1 · 27/11/2022 21:25

I'm sorry I'm roaring at this 😂 I'm sure you know exactly as you mean, as I did with my oran(ge) effort above! Funnily, it's not actually a difficult one but you'd tie yourself in knots trying to get it exact phonetically.

Yeah! Weirdly, ten years of never having to explain it… all ruined one mumsnet thread later 🙈🙈🙈

noideaboutanything · 27/11/2022 21:53

Oh and if I had a third boy I would absolutely have gone for Einer if my husband hadn’t decided on Einer the whiner….
am still tempted to have another baby just to use it though and I love it

mikado1 · 27/11/2022 22:01

Einer?!? Never heard of that but your dh was right with that unfortunate rhyme!

MILLYmo0se · 27/11/2022 22:01

schnubbins · 27/11/2022 19:39

I love Donagh!

Or to add to the cobfusion re Irish names and their spellings Donogh..... Though tbh most Irish people seem to convert it to Donnacha anyway
Dannan and Finian are lovely too imo

hoipolloih · 27/11/2022 22:04

I love Shea.

It’s Scandi not Irish but I also have Swedish heritage so it fits for me 🥰

I don't like Ronan either. Aside from the Keating association I think I just associate it with those Irish readers in primary school. 'Tá Mamaí sa cistín, tá Daidí ag léamh an páipéar...' Áine would be playing with Bran and Rónán was always stuffing his face with subh. Think that lad had a tapeworm.

This has cracked me up 🐛

Quick pink pen for the spelling and grammar:
'Bheadh Mamaí sa chistin agus bheadh Daidí ag léamh an pháipéir..."

Are you going to be teaching your kids Irish , OP?

mikado1 · 28/11/2022 08:01

Ah, no need to overcomplicated things with bheadh!! 😂

WonderWoop · 28/11/2022 10:25

Don't get all modh coinniollach on us @Mummyeyes

Not in the primary school readers! It was always present tense.

Flooper · 28/11/2022 10:55

Actually, maybe past tense too. Never bheadh though.

MILLYmo0se · 28/11/2022 11:37

Did we have to mention the modh coinniollach...... Sent shivers right up my spine!!

Irishfarmer · 28/11/2022 11:40

I named my son Pádraig but you said you'd like to avoid the fada. To get it on your phone just hold down the a.

I don't like Cahir or Cashel as names they seem odd to me, but I am from Tipp. A bit like calling your child Brighton

Daithí
Micheál
Ciaran
Cillian
Cathal
Donnacha
Odhran
Peadar

Is it the spelling of Eoghan your DH doesn't like? Maybe Eoin?

Sorry! Just meant Mammy would be "sa chistin", with a séimhiú after "sa" and no fada in "cistin". Daddy would be "ag léamh an pháipéir", genitive case, with séimhiú after "an".
Lovely to see a bit of Irish in a sentence.

JaneJeffer · 28/11/2022 12:10

Daidí needs to get up off his arse and get into that cistin. Lazy fecker,

Ah im only messin, it is actually lovely to suddenly come across a bit of Irish and nostalgia of the primary school readers, I was just a bit thick when it came to the MC and tenses lol
