Help!

We are expecting our second child, Irish living in London. Our daughter has an Irish name and we are keen to give DS one too. But we can't find a single one we like or haven't had to rule out. I've googled and googled, need some serious inspiration!

Can't use the below for various reasons:
Sean
Oisin
Niall
Seamus
Conor
Liam
Ruairi
Fionn

Considering but not loving:
Tadhg
Conan

Eoin, Ciaran, Cian, Aidan, Ronan

Crikeyalmighty · 26/11/2022 22:56

I like Gabriel

mikado1 · 26/11/2022 22:57

Gabriel is hardly Irish? 🤔

midsomermurderess · 26/11/2022 23:00

I have a cousin with a son called Faolán (little wolf I believe, which is rather good. I also like Conlaoch and Luan.

Love Fintan and Ferdia!

LizzieBet14 · 26/11/2022 23:05

Cormac
Fintan

Flooper · 26/11/2022 23:06

I like the Ultan and Ardal suggestions too.

caitlinrose · 26/11/2022 23:06

I know a Tadhg and my German colleague said it sounds exactly like the German word for "dough". Not that it matters unless you plan on living or working there.

Conan is unfortunately too strongly associated with the TV personality. I know an Irish guy named this and he is Conán.

Eoghan doesn't look nice to me.

Cuan is cute but I've only seen it as Cúán. It's my choice from your list.

Conall
Brefni (I know someone with this as his middle name)
Conrí
Cormac
Aodhan
Diarmuid
Caomhín
Caomh
Caolán
Tadhgán
Conleth

Angus
Aidan

but the last ones are anglicised I think (not sure).

Palmfrond · 26/11/2022 23:08

Art, a great name!

One of my (Irish-ish) DCs is a Paddy. I figured let it hang out!

TheVanguardSix · 26/11/2022 23:10

Naoise
Ardan
Cormac

Janedoe82 · 26/11/2022 23:11

Donnacha

Kellaher · 26/11/2022 23:15

Enda

Turlough

What’s your DD called?

Wrongsideofpennines · 26/11/2022 23:20

If your intention is to remain in the UK long term I would suggest something that isn't too tricky to pronounce by sight. (Conor, Fintan, Ronan, Sean etc) School will be frustrating if they have to forever explain something like Tadhg. Even if the teacher learns quickly, other kids/parents won't and they will forever receive invitations to Tad, Tide, Tiger, Tieg etc

You could maybe give them a much more Irish sounding/spelt middle name.

JaneJeffer · 26/11/2022 23:25

Féidhlim
Finbar

CliffsofMohair · 26/11/2022 23:26

Conleth is making a revival round my way
ferdia

WonderWoop · 26/11/2022 23:27

Didn’t expect so many responses!! Thanks all so much.

there’s a few names I had previously discounted but might add back to the list. Rian (don’t love Cian… makes me think of Kian from Westlife!), Cormac (don’t know why it doesn’t feel massively modern though), Oran is nice, Ruan/Ruadhan possibly

had thought Luan was a girls name @GrazingSheep (not sure why), but quite like it

@RoyKeaneisRight Uinseann - how do you say it?

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 26/11/2022 23:29

Darragh
Milo

WonderWoop · 26/11/2022 23:31

@caitlinrose thanks for the watch out on Tadhg! That’s what I worry about Conan too. Cuan - I’m not super keen on using fadas unless I have to…

@Wrongsideofpennines similarly on Tadhg that worries me a bit. Planning on staying in London realistically I would say

those suggesting Dara/Daire/Darragh… I had forgotten about this one. My heart would say Daire but my head would say use one of the other spellings

chevvyroo · 26/11/2022 23:33

Lorcan or Darragh ❤️

DumDeeDoh · 26/11/2022 23:33

I love Aodh (pron A) but again could be difficult in the UK.

Conall, Ultan, Fionn, Fintan, Liam, Daragh, Oisin, Éanna, Enda

I have a Diarmuid in Ireland which is still sometimes called Dermot! (But I still like it!)

cantba · 26/11/2022 23:36

Thady

Flooper · 26/11/2022 23:37

Any Enda living in England would get called Edna.
