Isabelle, Isabel or Isobel.

Which spelling do you prefer? Thanks!

This is a tricky one as there’s no “right” answer. I think Isabel is the most conventional in England (I think Isobel is Scottish and Isabelle is French?).

Isobel

They’re all equally valid with different routes but personally I prefer the Isobel spelling

Isabelle, it’s prettier to me

Isabelle. It looks nice, feminine and classic.

Isabelle is also the most common spelling at the moment.

Isabel is fine too.

Isobel would be pronounced differently in non-English speaking countries. So I would think about whether that would bother you.

I like the emphasis on the -belle part so Isabelle works best for me. I think with Isobel and Isabel more people will put the emphasis on the first syllable.

None of the spellings are English. Isobel is Scottish, Isabel is Spanish and Isabelle is French so I never really understand when people argue that one should pick Isabel because it's "the english spelling". It's not.

It's a nice name, OP. It is on our list as Isabelle but we'd rather pick Isabella.

ASCB31 · 20/11/2022 21:16

I've alwaya loved Isobel

LightUpTheWoods · 20/11/2022 21:24

In my street, we have an Isobel, Isabel, Izobel and Isabelle between 12-19. They all pronounce their full names the same, and all are known as Issy,

Guineapiggiesmalls · 20/11/2022 21:26

Isobel definitely. Isabelle is unnecessarily frilly.

feetfeet · 20/11/2022 21:30

Isobel

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 20/11/2022 21:34

Isabel. It just looks right to me. Maybe it's because my friend spells her name that way.

Frida9 · 20/11/2022 21:41

Isobel

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/11/2022 21:43

Isabel seems the most classic feeling imo - and it's the original one as far as I know (I think this Spanish variation of Elizabeth came first). I also like it's simple elegance personally - but I can see the arguments for Isobel (especially if Scots heritage/links) and Isabelle (as the French version's now the most popular spelling now in the UK, not sure why). The spelling complication is the only thing that puts me off lovely Isabel!

fjäl · 20/11/2022 21:44

Isobel

Isabel is the prettiest I think

jonesy1999 · 20/11/2022 22:17

Isobel or Isabel imo.

Not so keen on Isabelle as I don't like frilly names.

WordtoYoMumma · 20/11/2022 22:18

I like it with the Belle cos then it can be shortened to that if desired

My fave spelling of Isabelle is actually with a Y (Ysabelle) but that also sentences poor Ysabelle to.a lifetime of being "Isabelle-with-a-Y" and that would be super annoying

Sandysandwich · 20/11/2022 22:21

I love Isabel or Isobel
I would naturally write Isabel first, its a lovely name

Personally I find Isabelle quite an ugly frilly spelling that kind of ruins the name

Fivebeanchilli · 20/11/2022 22:23

I prefer Isabel.
