Mercy’s middle name

One of my favourite names, firmly on the list of potential names (I know it’s not popular on MN but we love it for personal reasons).

We have a few middle name ideas but wanted some ideas about what middle names you think sound beautiful with Mercy?

Thank you!

I definitely think either one syllable or 3+.

Mercy Madeline
Mercy Cordelia
Mercy Belle
Mercy Kate

Could you make it her middle name instead? I'm not sure nouns are ever good names especially when they are associated with a particular behavioural characteristic.
If not, it needs to be something short - Ann, May, Rae.

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 19/11/2022 19:03

Elizabeth
Vivienne

So far I love Kate, Mathilda and Elizabeth. Hermione is very cool too! I adore Joy as a middle name but might be too much having two virtue names?

Mercy Abigail
Mercy Louise
Mercy Alexandra.
Mercy Jo.

Most people don't use both their first and middle names though. I think joy goes perfect with mercy!

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 19/11/2022 20:21

Ooh lovely!
I think I'd go for a long middle name with possibly an a sound at the end.

How about Mercy Hannah, Mercy Lydia, Mercy Joanna, Mercy Helena, Mercy Evangeline

I don’t understand why MN doesn’t like Mercy, I think it’s a lovely name.
I agree with a PP that a longer name (3 or 4 syllables) sounds better for a middle name but only you knows what works for you!

Because mercy has such negative connotations. Mercy is not pity and it's not compassion either. Mercy is what someone in a position of power shows someone they could inflict punishment on. Same as clemency. Brings to mind death row inmates asking to be spared. It plays heavily into the biblical concept of sin and punishment. It's way too heavy a concept to burden a child with.

Mercy Athena is the name of character in a book.
I think it's nice and goes well as two distinct names.

fairycupcakes · 19/11/2022 22:40

Mercy Eleanor
Mercy Catherine
Mercy Delilah
Mercy Rosanne/Rosanna
Mercy Sophia
Mercy Bethan
Mercy Adelaide
Mercy Caroline
Mercy Claire

Henddraig · 19/11/2022 22:44

I think I’d go no middle name. Whatever you put there is going to sound like a Southern Belle exclaiming at someone eg, “Mercy, Caroline!”

PurpleButterflyWings · 19/11/2022 22:45

I'll get me coat. 😝

You’re welcome to your opinion. I think Mercy is a beautiful name and I the meaning is lovely. It does mean compassion, not quite sure why you said it doesn’t. From a dictionary:

‘compassionate treatment of or attitude towards an offender, adversary, etc., who is in one's power or care; clemency; pity 2 the power to show mercy to throw oneself on someone's mercy 3 a relieving or welcome occurrence.’

You might not like that meaning and that’s okay. You’re not using the name ☺️
