Are Casper and Kit posh names?

I mentioned these two names in passing to a friend and she made a quick remark that they’re “awfully posh”. It took me by surprise as I didn’t think so! I thought of them as similar to George - classless/used by all.
We’re in South West London, if that makes any difference!

The only Casper I know lives in a mansion. But then the Rooneys have both a Kit and at least one mansion I would imagine, and I wouldn’t say they were posh. So, no idea!

NurseBernard · 10/11/2022 07:27

Casper? Posh…?

What?

No, it’s not.

thegruffalosbum · 10/11/2022 07:28

SW3 isn't South London??

Artygirlghost · 10/11/2022 07:31

Not really.

Because these days names like these are just used by people who are desperate to seem ''posher'' than they really are...

WildCherryBlossom · 10/11/2022 07:31

Upper middle.

They'll be fine in SW3.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 10/11/2022 07:38

Pretty posh. Though CaspAr and Kasper are posher than Casper.

hopsalong · 10/11/2022 07:48

SW3 is Chelsea, not South West London. It's north of the river. The names will be fine there.

Casper is posher than Kit, I would say. But Kit isn't a real name: do you mean it to be short for Christopher? I don't think that's particularly posh, through it might be slightly so.

Wagsandclaws · 10/11/2022 07:50

I have a Caspar.

I think the spelling Casper is an American version of the name.

I also have a Milo and I don't think that's posh. I love both names for my Ds's.

youcantry · 10/11/2022 07:50

No I don't think so. I know one of each, Kit is 17 and Casper is 15. London. I guess middle class? I like both and they are both lovely boys!

MKCH · 10/11/2022 07:54

SW3 is definitely South West London. The same as Fulham is South West London... I don't think being north of the river makes any difference. Not a chance that Chelsea or Fulham are North London!

Anyway - I'd say both names are middle to posh. Playing them in my head in different accents, they definitely sound more posh.

I live in a very 'unposh' East Midlands city. Casper and Kit are both reasonably popular round here. Not posh at all. Casper/Caspar/Kascper/Kasper very popular in the East and Northern European communities. Kit is more popular now thanks to Game Of Thrones.

DuchessOfSausage · 10/11/2022 08:14

No

caroleanboneparte · 10/11/2022 08:50

The radfords have a Casper.

NCHammer2022 · 10/11/2022 08:51

London is different. Casper would be seen as massively posh where I am. Kit slightly less so but not much.

DrivingHomeForChristmaaargh · 10/11/2022 08:56

I think they were slightly arty UMC/Bedales names 30 years ago but are now just normal names. Certainly not too posh for Chelsea!

Proamble · 10/11/2022 08:57

I wouldn’t say so, I work with two Caspars and a Kit, and they are general labourers and wouldn’t define them as middle class. They’re quite common (as in well-known) and classless I would say. They give footballer vibes to me.

recklessgran · 10/11/2022 08:58

I hope not - one of my adult DD's changed her name from Kitty to Kit by deed poll as she thought that Kitty would be too posh and totally unrelateable in her line of work.

Elsanore · 10/11/2022 08:58

Not posh but both a bit crap. Casper- wannabe posh. Kit- overused since game of thrones and will date awfully.

recklessgran · 10/11/2022 08:59

We are definitely not posh by the way!

Kit for a woman and instead of Kitty is much better than Kit as a baby boy name. It sounds great.

I think as a general rule, if you have to ask if something is ‘posh’, you don’t need to worry about people thinking you are ‘posh’!

minipie · 10/11/2022 09:01

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/11/2022 06:35

And you're wondering if you're posh? Bless.

🤣

MapleLeafForever · 10/11/2022 09:01

I agree about the spelling difference - the Caspars I know are posher than the Casper. And Kit also fairly posh, again especially when short for Christopher. Similar to Chas for Charles, seems to have a posh connotation.

ZenNudist · 10/11/2022 09:02

No I know MC Kit. Never met a caspar but if I did I'd assume he was a friendly ghost
