Are Casper and Kit posh names?

I mentioned these two names in passing to a friend and she made a quick remark that they’re “awfully posh”. It took me by surprise as I didn’t think so! I thought of them as similar to George - classless/used by all.
We’re in South West London, if that makes any difference!

Aren't they the kids in the posh Catherine Tate sketches?

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 16:59

But why should someone's wealth/income correlate to their taste in names?
I know lots of 'rich' families (well, earning above average) whose children have beautiful and uncommon names. They don't all choose top 10 names.

In that statement, you are implying that their income/wealth correlates to a choice of beautiful and uncommon names.

I've always loved the name Kit, but as my DD is Tabitha I think Kit for DS is a cat too far lol 😆

Go for it with the names, they're both nice

That made me laugh! I wanted to call my daughter Tabitha but was vetoed by my Mum who searingly said "you may as well call her Tiddles"!!

I started reading this thread thinking Kit sounds a nice name and then read your comment, I obviously have a thing for cat names too Confused

Goooooseberry and cinnamon yo-gurt

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 17:14

@FayCarew I guess I was trying to understand your statement that 'rich people give their children 'normal' names.... whereas this thread is about 'posh' names, regardless of someone's wealth.

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 17:29

I don't really know any 'posh' people, whatever that means.
I know some people who on paper are considerably financially secure.
Their children have names that are unremarkable.

The Sebastians and Tabithas I know are from less financially stable families.

tiggergoesbounce · 11/11/2022 17:30

We know 2 kaspers around here and the parents are not posh. They are nice families but not posh. It is a lovely name.

No, i dont think Kit is posh at all.

LynneBenfield · 11/11/2022 17:33

Kit as nn for Christopher, possibly yes. Kit as a stand-alone name, no. The Rooneys have one, so that’s my yardstick.

Feysriana · 11/11/2022 17:52

Hm. Am in UK, I know a Kit and a Casper and they both live in houses worth £2million so I’m gonna say yes. But I acknowledge that my sample size is small.

That’s Kasper with a K though.

Kasper with a K is definitely not posh 🤣

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 18:00

Why does a highly valued house imply that someone's name is 'posh'?

Genuine question!Smile

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 19:09

You know it doesn't.
I know I said whatever posh means, but I'd guess that it means upper class.
A £2m house is not an indicator of 'posh'. The Rooneys probably live in a mansion, but would you say Wayne was a posh name?

IntrovertedPenguin · 11/11/2022 19:10

No. Very friendly ghost like though.

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 19:25

CorporateBull · 11/11/2022 19:29

I know quite a lot of properly posh people and I’d think most of them have kids with fairly classic names - nothing very exiting.

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 19:43

But why do people bring up 'posh' people?

This thread is about names - so called 'posh' names like Kit and Casper.

mondaytosunday · 12/11/2022 08:41

Yes I associate the name Casper with similar - Sebastian and Alistair. I know a Kit. 'Established middle class' if he took the quiz on the other thread!

FayCarew · 12/11/2022 08:51

@Gummibär , because they seem to think that the aristocracy and UC give their children names like Tarquin and Persephone

BCBird · 12/11/2022 08:55

If you are British I would say a definite yes. They are posh. I know that there are some Eastern pupils at my school with the name Kasper, don't know if it is posh for them as I don't know enough about culture

Well I've lived in a SW London post code my whole life. Firstly, PP are correct that it means South West, despite being north of the river. But SW and South are two very different beasts in London terms, OP does NOT live in South London if she's in SW3. Anyone who has lived there any reasonable length of time would know that.
But also worth pointing out that there are some pretty underprivileged communities and councils estates in SW3 so to the PP assuming OP is 'posh', not necessarily so. I mean she probably is if she's looking at those names but just saying ...

She never said she lived in South London.

Anyway Kit’s a lovely name, especially as a short for Christopher

thegruffalosbum · 12/11/2022 09:53

@LittleBearPad
Oh god, you're absolutely right!! Massive apologies for being a bellend and not reading properly...
