Are Casper and Kit posh names?

I mentioned these two names in passing to a friend and she made a quick remark that they’re “awfully posh”. It took me by surprise as I didn’t think so! I thought of them as similar to George - classless/used by all.
We’re in South West London, if that makes any difference!

Both lovely names, Casper probably more conventionally "posh" than Kit. Missing the point of the thread entirely, I am amused at some of the perceptions of SW London. I live in proper SW London - which most people would think of as Clapham, Wandsworth, Wimbledon and Raynes Park. Fulham and Chelsea are central London, Greenwich is SE London and Croydon is Croydon!

notmyrealmoniker · 10/11/2022 09:08

Kit is fine short for christopher and not posh at all.

CorporateBull · 10/11/2022 09:10

I think the Rooney’s Cass is Cassius not Casper.

I know two female Kits. Both very nice, bit posh, both gay (which is not particularly relevant other than they are both of an age where possibly they chose to shorten Kitty for effect in their teens - no idea).

BertaHoon · 10/11/2022 09:13

No, Kit the git. That's the only one I know!

SW3 is Chelsea, not South West London. It's north of the river. The names will be fine there.

Casper is posher than Kit, I would say. But Kit isn't a real name: do you mean it to be short for Christopher? I don't think that's particularly posh, through it might be slightly so.

The “SW” in SW3 literally means “South West” London.

You’re welcome 😁

I know one Kit and four Caspars at pre school/primary ages in London. Mostly middle-ish class English people but two of the caspar/kaspars are eastern european so that’s more widely used.

Deadringer · 10/11/2022 09:23

Casper is very posh imo, but I know a few very old farmer types called Kit who's birth name is Christopher so wouldn't consider it posh. I know these things can be generational though.

RuthW · 10/11/2022 09:25

No they are normal names. Kit I think isn't posh at all unless name is Christopher.

I think any shortened name as a full name definitely isn't posh.

Iguanainanigloo · 10/11/2022 09:26

Absolutely love the name Kit for a boy. I have a girl called Tabitha who goes by Tabi, so I may seem cat obsessed if I had a Kit too 😂

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 10/11/2022 09:26

Kit short for Christopher is a bit posh but nice. Kit on its own is less posh.
Caspar is posh, Casper could be posh, could be a friendly ghost.

I think both are fine to use and nice!

Friendly ghost will not be recognised by this generation of children, just their parents.

beonmywaythen · 10/11/2022 09:32

Yes

Schlaar · 10/11/2022 09:37

My cousins are called Kit, after their father/grandfather/great grandfather all the way back to about 1900. They live in council houses and historically the family worked as miners. So no, not posh at all!

If Kit is short for Christopher then they have plenty of options if they or you find it too posh!

sopeas · 10/11/2022 09:56

Oh come on OP… you live in SW3 you know this is an incredibly posh area. I wouldn’t worry if someone things your name choices are posh 🥴🤨

sopeas · 10/11/2022 09:56

WindyHedges · 10/11/2022 09:59

Well, Kit is short for Christopher, which is just a classic name. And Kaspar is pretty conventional in Northern Europe. I’d spell Caspar with a second “a” in the anglicised version.

But maybe for some people, conventional or classic names are posh. Just seem normal to me ….

KirstenBlest · 10/11/2022 10:12

According to darkgreener, the Casper spelling is more popular. The one I know is a Caspar. Kasper is also popular.
If you are considering popularity, I'd combine the spellings, and with Kit, add the Christophers and Christian, and any other names that would be shortened to Kit.

Both names are on a fairly steep upwards curve, which may indicate that they are of their time.

Onceuponawhileago · 10/11/2022 10:13

Both those names are used by two friends who have Collies! Sorry.

toastofthetown · 10/11/2022 10:14

Not at all. The Radfords have a Casper and Wayne Rooney has a Kit and neither family can be accused of being posh in any way. They’re just standard names, both of which are somewhat trendy at the moment.

Comedycook · 10/11/2022 10:16

I think Kit is pretty working class to be honest. A lot of "K" names are.

As for Caspar...it's slightly middle class I guess but not overly.

LisaJool · 10/11/2022 10:24

I think Caspar used to be quite upper crust, but not any more. Came on to say the Radfords have a Caspar, alongside a Millie, Tillie, Ellie and Hallie. Enough said.

LisaJool · 10/11/2022 10:25

Kit to me is definitely more smart, I don't know any.

ButterflyBiscuit · 10/11/2022 10:30

I would worry they'd "date" to being 2020s. (And personally caspar's a ghost to me!)

bogo · 10/11/2022 10:59

I've never met an English Casper. I know one Kasper/Kacper (unsure of spelling) through work, who is from Eastern Europe. I have no idea about his "class" because it's not a topic of conversation.

Kit reminds of the Game of Thrones actor and Wayne Rooney's son. Maybe it was considered a posh name in the past but not anymore.
