me and my partner are thinking of naming our baby Æli, prounounced ashley (from the ash tree), but of course the 'ae' will get confused for being said as 'ai'.

you could also say that the 'ai' could work as a decent translation from japanese since ai means love.

it's a bit unique, and different so we were hoping for advice on the name, would it be too different or does it sound cute ??

How will people type it?
Also I know the letter is called Ash but I don't think it's pronounced that way isn't it an eh sound as in Æthelfled.
Which would sound like Ethelfled?

MrsSirusBlack · 25/10/2022 14:36

She will get called ‘ Aeli’ and are the first two letters of her name common for use in electronic and paper forms you will need to fill in throughout her life? Is it even allowed at registration?

Suprima · 25/10/2022 14:38

but ‘ash’ is the name of the letter/diagraph, not how it’s pronounced.

its not ‘different’ and ‘unique’- it’s nonsensical

SpiderBabies · 25/10/2022 14:39

So... Ashley?

FairNotFair · 25/10/2022 14:39

If you like the sound of the name Ashley, just call her Ashley? It will save a lot of time in the long run.

Malfi · 25/10/2022 14:40

No one will pronounce that as Ashley - ever. Unless you tell them how to say it. That sound is more like Ellie, I would have thought. I also don’t think it’s great to aim for cute when naming a person -just my opinion on that.

singlemomof3 · 25/10/2022 14:40

Bloody awful

SoupDragon · 25/10/2022 14:40

You would be setting your child up for a lifetime of difficulty. Well, until they changed the spelling to something sensible.

SpiderBabies · 25/10/2022 14:43

What's more important to you: the name Ashley, or the weird spelling?

Soubriquet · 25/10/2022 14:44

Hello Elon. Bored on the moon?

TeaAndJaffacakes · 25/10/2022 14:44

The letter/symbol is called ´ash’ but usually pronounced like the ´a’ in ´cat’.
Just call her Ashley

Nosleepforthismum · 25/10/2022 15:11

Of course you can’t call your kid that! Put it down to pregnancy hormones and look back on this and laugh after giving your child a normal name. They will hate you if you do this to them.

IFrequentlyChangeMyUsername · 25/10/2022 15:14

I prefer €3Là
That's Areola

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/10/2022 15:15

would it be too different or does it sound cute ??

The spelling is stupid, sorry, but it is.

Does it sound cute? Well, you said that you'd pronounce it as Ashley, so no, not that cute. Although Ashley is a nice enough name.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/10/2022 15:17

You've clearly never worked in a call centre. Anyone with special characters is a total ball ache, for us and them.

Look forward to no one being about to find your records, for anything.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 25/10/2022 15:17

The letter æ is used in the Nordic languages with varying pronunciation, but none of them are "ash".
Just call her Ashley if you like the name, stop trying to be weird.

MassiveSalad22 · 25/10/2022 15:19

Are you even allowed to register someone with that character? I reckon you should change your name to æli if you like it so much.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 25/10/2022 15:25

Æ will be rendered as Ae on certain official documents such as passports in order to make them machine-readable. Neither Æli nor Aeli would typically be pronounced "Ashley" though, so you'll frequently be "correcting" people - a bit like Ma (Emma) or Lsn (Alison).

DontbesuchanarseGlenda · 25/10/2022 15:37

Really not a fan OP. Keep in mind that you’re also naming a 20/40/60 year old so don’t focus too much on ‘cute’.

Many congratulations on your new arrival.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/10/2022 15:44

Why would you burden your child like this?

OldTinHat · 25/10/2022 16:03

No. Just no.

Hatscats · 25/10/2022 16:10

Wtf

Regularsizedrudy · 25/10/2022 16:12

Are you Japanese

misteriosa · 25/10/2022 16:24

Grimes, is that you?

Call her Æßlī to make it extra unique.
