me and my partner are thinking of naming our baby Æli, prounounced ashley (from the ash tree), but of course the 'ae' will get confused for being said as 'ai'.

you could also say that the 'ai' could work as a decent translation from japanese since ai means love.

it's a bit unique, and different so we were hoping for advice on the name, would it be too different or does it sound cute ??

Do you hate your child? Why not try calling yourself that and see how it goes.

KirstenBlest · 25/10/2022 19:22

Is it half term?

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 25/10/2022 19:27

Or, call your child Ashley, spell it Ashley and be done, you like the name.. job done

Dreamingcats · 25/10/2022 19:28

I would guess at Ay-lee.
The spelling is a pita. No different to me than "La-a" .

CanYouFeelMyHeart · 25/10/2022 19:29

Settle doon Grimes

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2022 19:36

Don't be daft, OP.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 25/10/2022 19:38

Honestly what's the point? Setting your kid up for a lifetime of nobody being able to pronounce their name or remembering how to spell it. It seems like you want it purely for the sake of being different

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/10/2022 19:40

Just call her Ashley

That weird spelling and typing will cause total inconvenience through her life.

Since OP hasn't been back I assume the point is to wind up MN.

kaeyede · 26/10/2022 20:08

@DesMoulinsRouge if you look at some pronunciations it’s said as ash rather than ae. (i think it’s the nordic pronunciation, not sure though)

(long video explaining the pronunciation but i think you get the jist)

@MrsSirusBlack only realised this now sadly, but personally as “ailee” or “ashley” i like the name

CastleTower · 26/10/2022 20:11

Ash is the name of the letter, not the sound it makes.

Just like "zed" is "z" or "double-u" is "w". You don't read out the letter name when you read it.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 26/10/2022 20:12

No. Just no.

kaeyede · 26/10/2022 20:13

@FairNotFair i do really love the name ashley regularly but sadly my husband’s best friend (whom i have problems with) is called ashley which is why when i liked the name we were trying different ways to spell it or make it sound different

Not keen on Ashley as it is.

Furthermore, i cant stand the ridiculous spelling you've come up with.

kaeyede · 26/10/2022 20:17

wow mumsnet really is a terrifying place, i think i have been put off the name for now, when i’ve asked friends, they’ve said it’s a cute name which is why i decided to ask here

OP posts:
Betsyboo87 · 26/10/2022 20:18

No. This is ridiculous.

I have a name that was uncommon Welsh name when I was younger although it’s gained popularity now. It’s pronounced exactly as you would expect if you read it. However, I hated having to introduce myself or tell anyone new my name as I would always have to say it more than once and often spell it out. As a shy child it was a big burden. I can’t even imagine how I would have felt about this.

KylieCharlene · 26/10/2022 20:19

You must have a lot of time on your hands if you can spend time musing such ridiculousness.

You could spell it Ashleigh or Ashlea?

Ashley is traditionally the male way of spelling it. I'm not sure the way that you want would even be approved at the registry office.

Dacadactyl · 26/10/2022 20:19

Your friends don't want to hurt your feelings OP. Tbh, I don't want to hurt your feelings either but I would definitely reconsider the name.

We are more objective because we don't know you.

kaeyede · 26/10/2022 20:22

@KylieCharlene your ideas sound a lot better i like these very much thank you <3

been talking to my husband more about it and he still quite likes the original so now we’re wondering if “ai-li” or however else we’d spell it sounds good or not, and just keep ash as a nickname

But this is why you asked Mumsnet, to get honest opinions. Do you think your friends maybe are worried about telling you what they really think?
What posters here have said is what every person who comes into contact with your child throughout their life will think. If you are happy with that, then it's your choice. But at least you have had honest views here.
