me and my partner are thinking of naming our baby Æli, prounounced ashley (from the ash tree), but of course the 'ae' will get confused for being said as 'ai'.

you could also say that the 'ai' could work as a decent translation from japanese since ai means love.

it's a bit unique, and different so we were hoping for advice on the name, would it be too different or does it sound cute ??

You are setting her up for a life of misery where she will constantly have to tell
people how to say it, spell it, type it … the list goes on 😩 don’t do it

Calandor · 26/10/2022 22:40

Are you of a culture that uses ae? If not you look like Musk with his kid AE-12

OnaBegonia · 26/10/2022 23:09

@Rowen32
Scottish Eilidh doesn't use the fada, and as accents vary it is very often said to sound softer like aa lay rather than the harder lee sound.
Personally I have never come across anyone who pronounces the ay sound, the end can vary with lay/lee depending on accent.

Congratulations on the new baby on the way Grimes' surrogate Grimes!

As someone who speaks Danish as her first language. I can only hear Duckling. Æli. Is the first part of the Danish word for ducking (Ælling)

Add a k in front of it and you get a Danish swear word.

Also Æ. Is not pronounced like Ash. No matter what your Ameeican video says. The closest I can describe it in English is whe. You hear someone go. Errrr. But even that is wrong as no r sound. Just the closest to the sound.

Have you considered the spelling

KnickerlessParsons · 27/10/2022 00:21

Is your surname Musk?

User38899953 · 27/10/2022 00:24

Ashley. Call her Ashley.

If you really want an unusual spelling go for Ashlee/Aishleigh/ or something a Little less ridiculous that symbols.

Spookypig · 27/10/2022 07:00

Elon? Is that you?!

Girlsontour · 27/10/2022 07:03

Just no.

RambamThankyouMam · 27/10/2022 07:43

How about KVIIIlyn, pronounced Kaitlyn?

KnickerlessParsons · 27/10/2022 17:43

$*!<éãöô is a nice name too.

I know you’re joking but that’s better as it would get people closer to saying Ashley.

slowquickstep · 27/10/2022 20:06

Why on earth would you do that to your child ? Just call her Ashley.

EdgeOfACoin · 28/10/2022 06:39

Aisling.

It's Irish and pronounced Ashling.

All your problems will be solved.

CallieQ · 28/10/2022 07:05

Just pick a normal name

DeeDeeDaisy · 29/10/2022 15:28

No way
Call her Ashley

@DesMoulinsRouge if you look at some pronunciations it’s said as ash rather than ae. (i think it’s the nordic pronunciation, not sure though)

(long video explaining the pronunciation but i think you get the jist)

This video makes it clear that the 'ash' sound is a vowel. There is no pronunciation variation in the video that has the 'sh' element. Ash is the name of the sound. Not the sound itself.

Pearls1234 · 29/10/2022 17:30

Imagine Æli doing something mundane like phoning her car insurance provider and having to spell it so they could find her on their system. She’d be forever explaining it.

If you like the way it sounds, go with Ashley. Don’t burden the poor child.

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 29/10/2022 17:33

You won’t get it on a birth certificate or a passport. If you like Ashley, use Ashley.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/10/2022 18:01

Are you Elon’s latest squeeze??

Even for the child of a billionaire who can live on their own terms, this is stupid.

For anyone else it beggars belief - you aren’t naming your avatar - your child is a person who will have to negotiate the world. Why would you give them a name that no computer system will be able to find, no one will know how to pronounce, or be able to type.

I’m really hoping you are very young, because no adult should consider this. Pull yourself together and if you are bored with your life find some way of making it interesting that won’t make your child’s life a nightmare.
