'Unisex' names - too boyish?

thede · 28/08/2022 19:52

These are all names declared 'unisex' that I do love for girls, but they're all more commonly associated with boys (IMO).
Which of these - if any - would you say are acceptable to use on a girl at this point/which do you like (again, if any?)
Or do you know any girls with these names now?
I love them but feel I may be in a minority? Blush

Alex
Blake
Bodhi
Eddie
Evan
Finley
Frankie
Joey
Lennox
Logan
Luca
Noa
Perry
Quinn
Stevie
Tate

I love Tommi/Tommy for a girl. I have met one and she owned it.

GrumpyPanda · 29/08/2022 23:05

Alex, Frankie, Steve, maybe. As a pp mentioned, all of these really are abbreviations.

If you really want to throw a curveball, maybe take a look at Nino? Genuine girls name in Georgia, in fact she's their patron Saint.

bridgetreilly · 30/08/2022 01:21

Just give her a girl’s name. There’s nothing cool about boy’s names. It just means those names will stop being given to boys. Because sexism.

EleanorShellstrop28 · 30/08/2022 08:28

Blake, Bodhi, Eddie, Evan, Finley, Logan, Luca, Perry, Tate - these are not unisex names. They are boy's names that some people might have chosen to use for girls.

Noa - this isn't unisex. It's a biblical girl's name. Noah with an 'h' is an entirely seperate name for boys.

Quinn is unisex but I think it sounds very feminine.

Alex, Stevie and Frankie are nicknames for both feminine and masculine names but I think are too nicknamey to be a full name?

I'd only use Noa, I think.

heyyouboo · 30/08/2022 12:36

Stevie could definitely be used for a girl - Stevie Nicks anyone!?

salharg · 30/08/2022 19:24

I love Frankie short for Francesca

CoffeeBeansGalore · 30/08/2022 19:39

I know of a girl and a boy called Blair.

I like Frankie as a nn for Francesca or Frances. Gives her more options when she's older.

I've known male & female Camerons.

Like Quinn & Peri/Perrie

Harper?

Murray?

Sydney?

France98 · 30/08/2022 22:05

I know girls called Alex, Blake, James, Terri, Toni, Charlie, Dylan, Jayden, Quinn, Frankie and Stevie.

I have a daughter called Brodie, which is predominantly a boy's name in Scotland.

I'm totally fine with unisex names. I don't understand the hate for them on here, or the hate for diminutives. According to MN, every girl should be called Elizabeth and have shortened name options.

PutsFootInIt · 01/09/2022 23:27

Love these. Noa is my favourite girls name ever. But got vetoed for my dd🙄

Love Blake and Stevie. Very cool.

ladygindiva · 01/09/2022 23:41

Oh I love a unisex name . On your list I'd use
Blake
Eddie
Quinn
Frankie
Quite happily for a girl

Suzi9989 · 01/09/2022 23:43

Edy, love this name

Ayupchuck1 · 01/09/2022 23:54

Alex
frankie
Noa
Logan

(i know of girls with all these names)

PutsFootInIt · 01/09/2022 23:57

Also another unisex name I like is Robyn

Strokethefurrywall · 02/09/2022 00:00

Dylan isn't really unisex as it's predominantly a male name in UK, but I've met a couple female Dylan's and it was no.1 on our list if DS1 was a girl (were British but not in the Uk).

After Drew Barrymore's character in Charlie's Angels.

Shol · 16/12/2022 10:40

When I was choosing a name for my son, I bought a name dictionary.

The ‘girls’ section was three times as big as the ‘boys’ section.

Despite this, girls’ mums continue to pilfer the best names from the boys section, making it even harder to find a boys name that won’t be mocked as ‘girly’.

Thanks for nothing OP ☹️

Shol · 16/12/2022 10:41

(And ‘Bodhi’ is particularly ridiculous for a girl. Do you really want a daughter who all the boys nickname ‘the Body’?!)

TheBirdintheCave · 16/12/2022 11:53

I separated them into categories:

Spelt like this it's actually a girl's name in a number of languages:

Noa

Can be used as diminutives for girls with full names:

Alex (Alexandra)
Eddie (Edwina)
Frankie (Francesca)
Joey (Josephine)
Stevie (Stephanie)

Not given names for anyone as they're actually surnames:

Blake
Tate
Lennox
Perry
Quinn

These are not unisex:

Evan
Finlay
Logan
Luca

It wouldn't be so much of an issue if boys were also being called Isabella and Sarah and Katie etc... but they're not.

Still not an issue 👍🏼

TheBirdintheCave · 16/12/2022 12:09

@Djorkaeff Can't you see the double standard though? It's like saying girls need to have masculine attributes in order to be successful in life. It's like saying 'I wanted this child to be a boy', especially with something like Dylan or James or Cameron.

If someone posted here saying that they wanted to call their son Megan, how do you think people would react?

MerryChristmasToYou · 16/12/2022 12:10

Alex - ok, but now mostly used for a boy
Blake - boy, surname
Bodhi - awful, but boy
Eddie - ok if short for Edwina
Evan - boy
Finley - boy
Frankie - boy, ok if short for Frances/Francesca
Joey - boy. Use Joy or Joely instead
Lennox - awful, surname
Logan - surname
Luca - boy
Noa - Noah is so overpopular that it's meh
Perry - surname
Quinn - surnamev
Stevie - ok, if short for Stephanie or Stefania
Tate - surname

Other than Alex, Frankie and Stevie they seem to say 'Mummy wanted a boy'.
It's not as it there aren't millions of girl's names to choose from.

Monsterjam · 16/12/2022 12:12

I am a girl with a boys name….. I hate it! Hate it hate it. A life time of explaining her name is what you are signing her up for!

Beamur · 16/12/2022 12:17

These are all names I either know someone with or there is a celebrity with that name. Mostly as diminutives though - like Alex/Alexandra, Eddie/Edwina, Joey/Josephine.

Alex
Blake
Eddie
Frankie
Joey
Noa
Perry
Stevie

RuthW · 16/12/2022 12:17

Quinn and Logan are girl's names imo.

felulageller · 16/12/2022 12:25

Alex as a given name (on bc) I'd say boy but if I heard it I'd not know whether it was a boy or a girl who's bc is Alexandra
Blake more boy, only know lively as girl
Bodhi only boy
Eddie boy, as you confusing with the girls name Edie?
Evan more boy
Finley I'd say more girl esp Finlay spelling. The nn Finn, similarly both.
Frankie as a given name boy, if heard could be Francesca
Joey as above, perfectly normal to be a Josephine known as Joey
Lennox slightly more boy but fine as both
Logan only boys
Luca only boys really but sounds feminine
Noa a girls name 100%
Perry I'd think girl
Quinn equal
Stevie boy
Tate boy
