'Unisex' names - too boyish?

thede · 28/08/2022 19:52

These are all names declared 'unisex' that I do love for girls, but they're all more commonly associated with boys (IMO).
Which of these - if any - would you say are acceptable to use on a girl at this point/which do you like (again, if any?)
Or do you know any girls with these names now?
I love them but feel I may be in a minority? Blush

Alex
Blake
Bodhi
Eddie
Evan
Finley
Frankie
Joey
Lennox
Logan
Luca
Noa
Perry
Quinn
Stevie
Tate

I love Noa for a girl, and think you could reasonably use Alex, Blake, Finley, Frankie and Quinn without any trouble. Maybe Stevie. The others I think probably swerve slightly too far into the definitely male category for me, if you were looking for a well known unisex name.

Morgan

Brogan

I love Lennox for a girl.

I know a Tatiana whose NN is Tate, and several Quinns who are girls.

Suggestions:
Campbell
Bennett

pinklavenders · 29/08/2022 07:22

Noa is not unisex! It's a popular girls name.

Alex is a girls name (short for Alexandra)

I only know boys called Quinn, often short for Quentin.

I know a girl Elliott, shortened your Ellie

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/08/2022 07:23

Quinn or Noa

Fetacinno81 · 29/08/2022 07:36

IMO,

Alex
Blake
Frankie
Quinn

Are the only names I'd consider for a girl however I have heard of and known girls who are Perry, Noa, Evan.

KangarooKenny · 29/08/2022 07:38

I like Robyn and Quinn for a girl.

pinklavenders · 29/08/2022 07:43

Bizarre list of names that shriek Mummy wanted a boy

Twizbe · 29/08/2022 07:51

Alex short for Alexandra

Frankie short for Frances are fine

Cheeselog · 29/08/2022 07:51

Alex - yes as a nickname for Alexandra, no as a stand-alone name
Blake - male name, not unisex
Bodhi - are you a Buddhist? If not, no
Eddie - male name, not unisex
Evan - male name, not unisex
Finley- male name, not unisex
Frankie - yes as a nickname for Francesca, not as a stand-alone name
Joey - yes as a nickname for Josephine, not as a stand-alone name
Lennox- male name, not unisex
Logan- male name, not unisex
Luca- male name, not unisex
Noa - don’t like it
Perry - platypus
Quinn - not a huge fan
Stevie - awful on either sex
Tate - awful on either sex

Why do you want to give your daughter a boy’s name? It just screams ‘we wanted a boy’.

Dreamingcats · 29/08/2022 07:56

I hate boys names on girls but I would expect Noa and Quinn to be girls.

Alex, Frankie, Stevie I like if shortened from Alexandra, Francesca and Stephanie. Eddie from Edwina although I'm not a fan.

Joey at a push due to Dawson's Creek.

Starryskiesinthesky · 29/08/2022 07:59

Names I think of as unisex (but most a bit old fashioned now!)

leslie/lesley
francis/frances
robin
chris
sasha
ashley
lindsay
terri

whereas your list seems to be boys names!

good luck deciding!

Frankie and the like are nicknames.

Please, think of the grown woman she will be, not the cute toddler.

Plenty grown men seem to cope with being called Frankie/Stevie/Davey etc.

KirstenBlest · 29/08/2022 11:39

@YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse , yes but they are men.

I wouldn't want people to assume I am a man if they saw my name .

zingally · 29/08/2022 12:19

I know a girl Frankie (birth certificate is Francesca). It suits her and I know her parents like gender neutral names for girls.

Wilburisagirl · 29/08/2022 13:00

I've known a 38 year old Stevie and a 2 year old Stevie. I'm not sure if my negative feelings toward the adult cloud my judgement but I don't particularly like the name.

I know an Alex whose full name is Alexandra, a Jo (Joanne) and Joey (Jocelyn). I like that these names have a more traditionally feminine option or more masculine option depending on what the child themselves prefers as they grow up.

I don't love Eddie for a girl (unless a nickname for Edwina) but I do love the name Edie (ee-dee) for a girl.

I know a female Quinn and think it's a lovely name.

BiscuitLover3678 · 29/08/2022 13:04

Stevie is definitely a cool girl’s name (schitts creek) and I like Logan

The Bodhi I know is a girl

Suedomin · 29/08/2022 13:06

From your list only
Noa,.
Alex (short for Alexandra)
Frankie (short for Francesca)
Stevie (short for Stephanie)
For me the others are clearly boys names

Perfect28 · 29/08/2022 13:11

Jesus what makes a name for a boy or for a girl, they are just names. Go with whatever you like!

Yes, but to put Frankie on the birth cert, boy or girl, is awful.

So what? Names are names. There are no laws, if you like a name use it 🤷🏻‍♀️
