'Unisex' names - too boyish?

thede · 28/08/2022 19:52

These are all names declared 'unisex' that I do love for girls, but they're all more commonly associated with boys (IMO).
Which of these - if any - would you say are acceptable to use on a girl at this point/which do you like (again, if any?)
Or do you know any girls with these names now?
I love them but feel I may be in a minority? Blush

Alex
Blake
Bodhi
Eddie
Evan
Finley
Frankie
Joey
Lennox
Logan
Luca
Noa
Perry
Quinn
Stevie
Tate

I know a female Morgan (lovely person!).

mogwa · 29/08/2022 16:37

When my mum was younger, she knew a girl named Craig. Somehow, I don't see that one catching on.
I don't like any of these names but they're not my personal style. That said, Alex is a perfectly reasonable name for a girl (though I prefer it as a nickname for Alexandra). And Noa is very popular for girls in several countries e.g. Spain, Israel.

goldfinchonthelawn · 29/08/2022 16:41

I've known women for decades with the names Frankie, Joey and Stevie so it has never occurred to me that they are male names. Same would be true of Alex though I don't have any close friends called Alex.

Suzy14837 · 29/08/2022 16:50

Alex - nice for a girl
Blake - know a boy. Don't like for boys or girls
Bodhi - don't like. Trying to be too cool.
Eddie - Def a boys name. A girl called Eddie will be mistaken for Edie
Evan - know a boy
Finley - know many boys
Frankie - know boys and girls
Joey - no, I wouldn't use this for either. Name of a 1980s disability campaigner, was a pejorative term in the 1980s
Lennox - as in L.Lewis?
Logan - know a boy
Luca - know many boys. Horrible name, unless Italian ancestry, sorry.
Noa - only know girls, popular in Jewish community
Perry - could work for either, but don't like it
Quinn - as in Harley?
Stevie - Stevie Smith was female poet, Stevie Nicks? Don't like it for either sex though!
Tate - know a boy

midsomermurderess · 29/08/2022 17:17

Noa, which seems more popular as a girls’ name. Frankie (could be a nn for Frances); Stevie nn for Stephanie. None of the others grab me.

Confusion101 · 29/08/2022 17:26

Christ can there ever be a name thread that doesn't attract all the "X is only suitable as a n.n. for XXXX". 🙄🙄🙄🙄 If OP wants to go with Frankie or Stevie or Alex on a birth cert do it!

midsomermurderess · 29/08/2022 17:45

I’m not saying they are ‘only’ suitable for nicknames so stop stamping and shouting about. I guess my thinking is, they’re not that unisex when they can be seen to clearly come from girls names. Now go away and calm down. Or find another thread to tantrum over.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 29/08/2022 18:46

I like Quinn for a girl

Sushi7 · 29/08/2022 18:53

Alex and Frankie are fine, but only if they’re nicknames for Alexandra, Alexa or Francesca. Blake and Stevie are okay unisex names. Everything else in the list is a boy name.

backwhiteandredallover · 29/08/2022 18:53

Alex - fine but 80s
Blake - yes but depends on surname
Bodhi - no
Eddie - if short for something
Evan - no, but I know an Evanée
Finley - no
Frankie - if short for Frances or Francesca
Joey - if short for something
Lennox - fine
Logan - no
Luca - prefer Luka
Noa - nice
Perry - no a bit great uncle ish
Quinn - lovely
Stevie - rough girl at school in 90s
Tate - country singer

Others I like:

Teddy - short for Theodora
Dylan
Cameron
Rory - short for Aurora or something else?
Max

villamariavintrapp · 29/08/2022 18:56

I don't like boys names for a girl, because it's quite sexist. So I'd pick one that's a nickname for a longer girls name.

MbatataOwl · 29/08/2022 19:09

George/Georgi- Could be short Geordanna, Georgia etc

Astounding · 29/08/2022 20:01

I love Noa. Alex is ok. Not keen on the others but do like Lucia . I’ve only ever come across Luca for boys. Same goes for Evan.

Cheeselog · 29/08/2022 20:24

Never heard of Frankie Valli, Frankie Boyle, Joey Tribbiani or Stevie Wonder?

Unicorn55 · 29/08/2022 20:27

OppsUpsSide · 29/08/2022 20:27

Love the name Stevie, taught a Stevie once and she was just lovely

DaisyP24 · 29/08/2022 20:35

Alex, Blake, Evan, Finley, Frankie, Logan, Noa, Perry, Quinn, Stevie, Tate - all ok for a girl. My favourites are Alex and Evan.

Bodhi, Eddie, Lennox & Joey - still very boyish for me.

I really like Luca for a girl but I reckon I'll be in the minority!

Turtletortle · 29/08/2022 20:42

Stevie is one of my favourite names for a girl.

I also like Ellis for a girl (thanks Grey’s Anatomy) and Robyn, but I’m also not very girly & can’t get away with names I think of as super feminine so I wouldn’t think it was weird if any of those names were used for a girl!

Vinylloving · 29/08/2022 20:47

Alex
Frankie
Joey
Only these could feasibly be girls to me

Vinylloving · 29/08/2022 20:48

Jamie would work

Vinylloving · 29/08/2022 20:50

Or Sasha

TheodoraPlumptre · 29/08/2022 20:51

Alex(andra) and Frankie (Francesca) are fine. The others aren't.

Yika · 29/08/2022 21:25

I like Alex and Noa.

I like the name Leigh which is quite androgynous. I also knew a female Dale.

OceanbreezeSun · 29/08/2022 22:51

From your list, I think Alex, Blake , Eddie, Frankie, Stevie & Quinn work for a girl.

The rest I see as boys names, especially Finley , Logan and Lennox.

I like the spelling of Noa for a girls name but alongside all the other Noahs ( as it’s such a popular boys name) it might be abit much.

glitterfarts · 29/08/2022 22:58
