I have a 13 year old Sapphire! It’s a fab name but people on here will say it’s a stripper or prostitute name. I love it and it suits my girl perfectly

bloodywhitecat · 13/08/2022 18:09

Why? Because some people are judgemental shits, that's why. It's hurtful and unkind, some folk need to wind their necks in.

MintJulia · 13/08/2022 18:12

Such small minded nastiness says a lot more about her than it does about you !

I have friends and colleagues called

Pearl (British)
Amber (Irish)
Crystal (Canadian)

All of them intelligent, stylish professional ladiess. Not a 'chav' in sight 🙂

chloesaffie · 13/08/2022 18:13

hiya i love the name are you American ? Alot of Americans seem to jump to stripper its so weird to me this girls mum is American thats why i ask. Its slowly going up the name charts in England and this is the first time someone said something negatively about her name that i know of .

They’re lovely names, wouldn’t think of strippers at all. Says more about her than it does about the names. Ignore.

gingerchick · 13/08/2022 18:18

I’m British, if you advance search on here it always comes of badly but we don’t care, have had lots of comments from people good and bad but I’ve never regretted my choice

Megapint · 13/08/2022 18:24

I think it's a lovely name. People who feel the need to label others with particular (derogatory) characteristics because of their names are generally small minded arse's best ignored.

FayCarew · 13/08/2022 18:27

Are you sure she actually said it or was it something someone said about her?
The name isn't one I'd pick but there's nothing wrong with it. Someone called Emerald has won several awards recently and she's Oxbridge-educated, and has a famous father who went to Eton.

Same1977 · 13/08/2022 18:30

I think its all about previous encounters.I know an Amber and she is a 'cool mum'.So that is the association from now for that name.More than once I have seen names like Crystal for example as character names for strippers.Perhaps it's about who you know by that name or heard of?

jay55 · 13/08/2022 18:30

Sapphire is the name of a famous strip club in Las Vegas. So to come people it's like you named your daughter Stringfellows.

I do think jewel names are lovely but you can't pretend the link with stripping doesn't exist.

lbnblbnb · 13/08/2022 18:34

As soon as someone uses the words chav/chavvy they have exposed themselves as total snobs. Ask yourself if you value their opinion - I would suggest not! People have all sorts of opinions, doesn’t mean you have to take it on board. Shows more about her than you.

FlamingoDust · 13/08/2022 18:34

Sapphire is a gorgeous name. One of my favourites alongside Emerald!

It is so famous that most people will never have heard of it?!?

chloesaffie · 13/08/2022 18:37

Saph said it was directed at me it was said to her my a mutral friend that the woman ask where my child was as the girls where meeting up then said it in front of them all so they told her after . my daughter is the Opposite of the chav stereotype .i was surprised that a American knew what chav meant .

Sapphire is okay but Saf or Saffie does sound a bit chavvy

You don't need to kmow the club itself.Simple Google search will tell you how popular gemstone names are for dancers

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 13/08/2022 18:42

My dd has a mn stripper name! She is a feisty girl and it suits her!!

chloesaffie · 13/08/2022 18:44

I know the link is there i said its mostly americans commenting stripper and i had no idea that it was a famous strip club in the states so maybe thats the connection but if there was a strip club called Elizabeths noone would call all Elizabeth strippers .

OP posts:
caramac04 · 13/08/2022 18:44

I like the name and the shortening’s. I don’t know much about strippers so would never make this association plus we are talking about a child. Yes I know she will grow up but honestly, she will still have a beautiful name.

Toosadtocomprehend · 13/08/2022 18:47

I would never of linked jewel names with stripclubs …whatever next ?!!

Just think about it this way...even if the association for SOME people is dancers.Think why dancers chose these names. They are beautiful, fiesta, sexy names. The more people use the names the less association there will be

PoppyLupin · 13/08/2022 18:52

I don't go and see strippers so wouldn't make the connection. Doesn't sound chavvy either

Babdoc · 13/08/2022 18:53

I’d have thought more Americans would associate it with the Saphira in the bible, who fell dead at St Peter’s feet after she and her husband were caught witholding funds from the early Christians’ communal purse!

NCHammer2022 · 13/08/2022 18:55

I have no problem with jewel names, but your OP reads like you’re sneering back at her daughters’ names so I’m not sure you’ve got the moral high ground here.
