Georgiana pronunciation

How would you pronounce Georgiana? And where are you located? We are in NW England. I would say Jor-Jaynah but DH says Jor-Jee-Arnah. I like both pronunciations but would prefer to use the ‘correct’ one. This is only for a middle name so not the end of the world if people mispronounce. So how would you say it?

Jor-Jee-Arnah
Jor-Jee-Anna
Jor-Jaynah

Something else entirely?

Thanks!

I would say George-eee-arna but I notice in the film with Kiera Knightly it's pronounced differently- I did wonder if it was regional. Lovely name, in fact it was my great Grandmas name.

KangarooKenny · 09/08/2022 08:52

Jor- Jee- arna.

Soubriquet · 09/08/2022 08:53

Jor-jee-anna

FayCarew · 09/08/2022 08:53

I'd say Jor-jay-nah or Jor-jee-ah-na.
Georgina is easier

CatsAreCrackers · 09/08/2022 08:56

Jor jee arna

IsThePopeCatholic · 09/08/2022 09:01

Jor-jee-arna

SummaLuvin · 09/08/2022 09:02

It's one of those names where I just wouldn't know which way it would be said so I would make a guess between Jor-Jaynah and Jor-Jee-Arnah. I think both ways are standard pronunciations, although the first version is more 'correct' the second is more instinctive.

I have a cuddly orangutan called Mavis Georgiana (Jor-Jaynah).

hewouldwouldnthe · 09/08/2022 09:06

Jor-gee-arna. South east.

watcherintherye · 09/08/2022 09:06

I wouldn’t put much stress on the middle syllable, so it would sound more like Jor-Jarna. I’m in the South.

maranella · 09/08/2022 09:06

Jor-jaynah

SE England

DotDotDotDotDot · 09/08/2022 09:09

I would instinctively say jor gee arna, I have no idea if that’s “correct” though. As pp said maybe Georgina would be easier.

Boybandfacedfannyfart · 09/08/2022 09:10

Jor-jar-na

RP

Eranzer · 09/08/2022 09:11

Jor janna. NW too

Henddraig · 09/08/2022 09:12

Either Georgy arna or George arna for me - and I’m not sure which as I don’t think I’ve ever heard it out loud.

NeedMoreMilk · 09/08/2022 09:12

Jor-jee-arna.

The Duchess of Devonshire pronounced it ‘Jor-jay-na’, but I think that was just her!

2pinkginsplease · 09/08/2022 09:13

Glasgow and I’d say :
jor-jay-Anna

I don’t get why people would put an r in the Anna part at the end, there isn’t even an r in the end part of the name.

MrsMontyD · 09/08/2022 09:14

George ee arna I'm in the midlands, I have friends who would say Jor jaaaaana

Also my English teacher at school pronounced the Georgiana in Jane Eyre as Jor-Jay-Na

Something about long vowels ending in a vowel or something.

if we were to follow your rule, then we’d call Belgians bell-janes or Georgiana jor-junna

miffmufferedmoof · 09/08/2022 09:26

Mr Darcy says it jorjee arna so that’s what I’d go with!

Louise0701 · 09/08/2022 09:28

Jorjayna??? Never heard this and wouldn’t take this from the spelling, either.

Ive always pronounced it Jor-Gee-Arna like your DH.

We’re in South Yorkshire.

itssquidstella · 09/08/2022 09:32

Jor-JAY-na here.

Bergamotte · 09/08/2022 09:36

Jor-jay-AH-na

Georgina I would pronounce Jor-JEE-na.

Mummyoflabradors · 09/08/2022 09:37

I noticed that too re the film The Duchess with Keira Knightley. Georgiana was pronounced totally different to how I would pronounce it.
I would say George ee anna. But I think that's incorrect.

The name Cholmondeley I would pronounce Chol mon del ee but that is incorrect, apparently it is Chumley.
Worcester ls not Wurcester but Wuster.
