Georgiana pronunciation

How would you pronounce Georgiana? And where are you located? We are in NW England. I would say Jor-Jaynah but DH says Jor-Jee-Arnah. I like both pronunciations but would prefer to use the ‘correct’ one. This is only for a middle name so not the end of the world if people mispronounce. So how would you say it?

Jor-Jee-Arnah
Jor-Jee-Anna
Jor-Jaynah

Something else entirely?

Thanks!

Boybandfacedfannyfart · 10/08/2022 20:15

Someone has already explained rhotic vs non-rhotic accents in this thread. Scroll up! 🙄

Lurleene · 10/08/2022 23:19

It's Jorj - ee - ahna in Sanditon.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/08/2022 00:28

The Jor-jay-nah pronunciation was supposedly invented by the friends of the Duchess of Devonshire, and if you said it like that you were in her inner circle and if you didn’t you weren’t. Not sure if that’s true but some people do seem to think this is the ‘correct’ way of saying it.

maranella · 11/08/2022 14:03

Is that right @Luredbyapomegranate? I've seen the film starring Keira Knightley and never actually met anyone called Georgiana, so assumed that was the right pronunciation. I stand corrected!

GCAcademic · 11/08/2022 14:04

Jor-Jaynah

KirstenBlest · 11/08/2022 14:17

@SemperIdem , nobody explained the Car-sell bit
I can just about get Car-sul but not Car-sell.
Can you explain it please.

ILoveYoga · 11/08/2022 14:24

Surrey based.

jorg jee anna

there is no “r” in anna

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 14:27

There's no R in -iana either

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2022 14:28

Jor-Jee-Arnah
SE
I know a Liliana who prounces the end Arnah

lunar1 · 11/08/2022 14:30

I'm in the NW and dyslexic, I'd completely avoid saying it until I'd heard someone else say the name.

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2022 14:31

Also Lana, Juliana, Ariana

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 14:31

Arnah

Why add the R?!

WinterDeWinter · 11/08/2022 14:34

Op, can you explain where you see the 'ay' sound? It's not 'ai' it's 'ia' - in other words ;eeyah'

IaltagDhubh · 11/08/2022 15:07

it wouldn’t occur to me to pronounce it Jor-Jay-Na. The letters aren’t there for it to make that sound. But I loathe Jane Austen and I’ve no idea who this Duchess is that everyone is talking about, so that may be why I’ve never come across it. And I’m afraid my immature brain keeps wanting to turn that pronunciation into Jor-Jaynus… sorry…

I'd either say Jor-Jee-Ah-Nah (equal emphasis on all syllables) or more likely Jor-JAHH-Nuh with the middle two syllables run into one and stressed.

I’m south east England, with a non-rhotic accent, but for some reason I’ve always pronounced bath, castle, grass etc with a short a rather than the long a (bath rather than bahhhth, etc).

Georgina is nicer.

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2022 15:17

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 14:31

Arnah

Why add the R?!

Because op is trying to distinguish between different ways of pronouncing it.
If she wrote "would you pronounce it Georgiana, Georgiana or Georgiana" it would be confusing.

AssaMarra · 11/08/2022 15:24

Jor-jay-nah???? Never heard of it with that jay in the middle.
Jor-janna for me- NW

eish · 11/08/2022 15:30

I say Georgie-Anna. It is my name so that's my personal pronunciation. So many people say Georgie-Arnah. No one ever mispronounces it to Geor JAY nuh though.
People often comment on how nice it is but often don't pronounce it right! I find northerners are better at it than southerners.

beastlyslumber · 11/08/2022 15:32

Rhymes with 'vagina'.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/08/2022 15:41

KirstenBlest · 11/08/2022 14:17

Ignoring the R, the reason car-sell (or cah-sell) sounds weird is because you're giving the end bit full stress. The sound in "sull" sounds more like the unstressed schwa most people use there.

In the north east it can be more like more like cassill.

KirstenBlest · 11/08/2022 16:25

If some one writes CAR-SELL then how am i meant to say it other than car sell.
The stle bit is like in gristle, which I say as grissl, not gris-sell

I know how people in New Cassle say it. They don't say Noo Car-Sell

KirstenBlest · 11/08/2022 16:28

The space in some one was sloppy typing
I really can't get Car-sell from Castle, and no I am not stressing the sell bit.
Castle is Cassle as far as I am concerned.

LuluBlakey1 · 11/08/2022 16:29

Jaw Jarna

SizzlerFizzler · 11/08/2022 16:31

Georgiana from Pride and Prejudice is pronounced georgie-anna in all the adaptations I've seen.

Bit of a mouthful of a name. Georgie is a lovely shortening though.
