Georgiana pronunciation

How would you pronounce Georgiana? And where are you located? We are in NW England. I would say Jor-Jaynah but DH says Jor-Jee-Arnah. I like both pronunciations but would prefer to use the ‘correct’ one. This is only for a middle name so not the end of the world if people mispronounce. So how would you say it?

Jor-Jee-Arnah
Jor-Jee-Anna
Jor-Jaynah

Something else entirely?

Thanks!

Dear Jorge-ee-arna, how I long to see her :)

that is an excellent impression of Miss Caroline Bingley Grin

DH had a great-aunt with the name. She pronounced it Georgie-anna (anna with a short "a", none of this ahna business). She was in the northern US.

But I do like the George-jane-a (as in Duchess of Devonshire) pronunciation.

@SemperIdem , nobody explained the Car-sell bit
I can just about get Car-sul but not Car-sell.
Can you explain it please.

In some English accents the r in car is not sounded, resulting in car being pronounced something like cah or caah, to rhyme with fa or la as in the song Do a deer from The sound of music, or the film La La Land. They also pronounce the ca in castle with a long a to rhyme with la/fa, but as it is the same sound in their accent as car, they type the pronunciation as CAR. Those who sound the r in car would likely type cah.

The space in some one was sloppy typing
I really can't get Car-sell from Castle, and no I am not stressing the sell bit.
Castle is Cassle as far as I am concerned.

I also say cassle but know many people, mostly south east English people, who say caah-sull with a long a. When they type car they don't mean they sound /roll r in any way, they're indicating they use a long a not a short a

If some one writes CAR-SELL then how am i meant to say it other than car sell.
The stle bit is like in gristle, which I say as grissl, not gris-sell

I know how people in New Cassle say it. They don't say Noo Car-Sell

I agree with you.

I was just trying to explain why it sounds peculiar (and wrong).

And that's because in "car-sell" the "E" is much stronger than the way you'd actually pronounce it (like in gristle).

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/08/2022 16:58

George-gee-anna

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/08/2022 17:00

Nobody pronounces it "car-sell" — it'll be cassle or cah-ssle depending on how you sound your a.

But if you had to write the "ssle" sound down with different letters it would be closer to "sull" than "sell" (but it's really a schwa, like at the beginning of "around").

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 17:04

I bet half the people on this thread crying over the 'R' sound being added say castle like CAR-SELL anyway.

But exactly those of us 'crying' over the R sound being added do NOT say Car sell as we would pronounce the R!

Love the name Georgiana!!

I’m from the SE, pronounce an R in Castle and glass like glarse. I would say Jaw-gee-arna
however I also love the Cavendish jaw-jayne-ah pronunciation

MrsFionaCharming · 14/09/2022 01:20

Jor-Jee-Anna

The Anna sounding more like Anna from Frozen than the typical U.K. pronunciation.
