Thanks for all the opinions on my other thread 😄
Dh and I have continued to ponder and have decided Susan is no longer on our list, but we have added a couple of others that we are now considering. So our updated list is
Shirley (my favourite for years)
Bernadette (Bernie or Ettie for nn)
Marjorie
Magnolia

Dh likes nn Madge for Marjorie 😄

Sorry I don't like any of them.... assuming this is serious.

daisypond · 02/07/2022 08:36

I really, really like Marjorie. It’s a great name, very traditional and ancient, but not common these days.
Not keen on Shirley. I liked Susan on your other thread.
Bernadette is OK… It seems very religious to me. There are other names you could get an Ettie from.
Magnolia just signifies bland to me, no matter how nice the plant.

flashpaper · 02/07/2022 08:37

Susan
Shirley still doesn't work with your other daughters name.

PragmaticWench · 02/07/2022 08:39

If you like Shirley and Marjorie then Maureen, Audrey and Patricia are of the same era.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/07/2022 08:43

Susan is lovely,so is Marjorie.

Annoyedwithmyself · 02/07/2022 08:43

Love Shirley, Bernadette (Bernie) or Marjorie (Maggie for short?). Not magnolia though. It's a gorgeous flower but just not a nice sound to me and yes, associated with municipal paint. Susan is my favourite though!

ComfyChairPose · 02/07/2022 08:45

I think Susan could come back. Susie and Billy, Jane and Richie and Peter and those names could ome back, but I think there'll be a longer wait for Shirley to come back.

At first I thought you had a daughter called Shirley!

I think dated names that could plausibly go with Shirley and 'lift' Shirley would be Valerie
Celia

Old fashioned names that still work
Margaret
Eleanor
Marianne

Bernadette and Marjorie aren't great. I'm 52 and these names sounds like my Mum's age group. Too soon to come back. In 20 years perhaps Bernadette will sound fresh but I cannot imagine it!

Ouchmytoe100 · 02/07/2022 08:50

Sorry, I really really dislike them all. At an absolute push, if someone had a gun to my head, I'd choose Magnolia because Maggie is sweet. The others I'd not use if you paid me!

monicagellerbing · 02/07/2022 08:53

Are you joking?

CheshireCats · 02/07/2022 08:58

They are all terrible

toomuchlaundry · 02/07/2022 08:59

Stick with Susan

Luxa · 02/07/2022 09:05

I like Susan and Marjorie.

DontLikeCoffee · 02/07/2022 09:08

Well, if I had to choose out of a terrible bunch it would be Bernadette. But I would hate to be called any of those names.

She could get away with Magnolia if she was cool. But there are so many other nice flower names that are unusual.

Marjorie is worse than Shirley. And Madge just reminds me of Neighbours.

Winterfellismyhome · 02/07/2022 09:19

All bad. Margaret nn Maggie is cute

Clarabellawilliamson · 02/07/2022 09:21

Well I think Susan/ suzie/ Sue are all great names but I also like Bernadette.

I think a Bernadette or Bernie would be cool

SpaceJamtart · 02/07/2022 09:25

Bernadette,
Just because the nicknames save it, bernie and Etta/ Ettie are sweet

Shirley is still awful and marjory is so mean

DontLikeCoffee · 02/07/2022 09:33

And just because you might call her Madge, doesn’t mean anyone at school will. She could be called Marj, like the Simpsons. Either way it’s an awful name.

SmileyPiuPiu · 02/07/2022 09:35

Hate them all sorry

Greenkitten · 02/07/2022 09:35

I think bernadette’s lovely!

PritiPatelsMaker · 02/07/2022 09:39

Shirley is your favourite. If you can persuade DH I'd go with that. I've never met a Shirley who wasn't absolutely lovely Wink

Balloonsaresqueaky · 02/07/2022 09:48

On dear are you giving birth to a 60 year old? I am 40 and went to school with a Susan and remember thinking even back then what an old fashioned name it was ! They are all terrible, sorry!

TheRosesAreInBloom · 02/07/2022 09:50

sorry, all terrible IMO

MrsPrimulaSpread · 02/07/2022 09:51

I prefer Susan to Shirley
Magnolia reminds me of a donkey

MidwichCuckoo · 02/07/2022 09:51

I like Marjorie

NannyR · 02/07/2022 10:01

I like Maggie but for Margaret rather than Magnolia. I really love Susan and Susie and along the same lines I quite like Janet.
