I think it's more likely that a Louie will have his name misspelt as Louis, than a Louis will be mispronounced Lewis.

Jude is the German word for Jew, so the association with it being on the yellow stars during the Holocaust puts me off. But objectively it's a nice sounding name.

heavyistheheed · 01/06/2022 13:53

Louis

I have taught many and they don't tend to get confused for Lewis.

Am not keen on the Louie spelling.

So if you don't like Louis then I would say Jude.

HereIAmBrainTheSizeOfAPlanet · 01/06/2022 13:56

Jude is a bit wet.

GreatCuppa · 01/06/2022 16:50

Jude. Dislike Louis, it’s just wet.

pinklavenders · 01/06/2022 17:23

Louie

I don't like Jude. It means Jew in German so it doesn't travel well either.

Louie is the more popular spelling in the UK now, as Louis get mispronounced as Lou-is by non French speakers.

pinklavenders · 01/06/2022 17:25

Louis is generally pronounced Lou-is outside of France. Think of St Louis in Missouri for example

Livpool · 01/06/2022 17:30

Jude - I have a Jude

What tosh. Think of:

Louis Armstrong
Louis Theroux
Louis Tomlinson
Louis Mountbatten
Prince Louis
Louis Walsh…

Totally agree. My early 20’s dses have several Louis’ amongst their friends - no one has a problem with the Louee pronunciation.

Also agree.

Oneearringlost · 01/06/2022 18:26

Both lovely but I prefer Jude.
What about Julius?

Newbubs · 01/06/2022 19:09

Not julius - that would sound ridiculous in our area & within our family / friends

resm · 01/06/2022 19:42

Jude, but Louis a close second.

VeryQuaintIrene · 01/06/2022 19:50

Do not get the Jude love at all. The obscure, patron saint of lost causes, first syllable of Judas etc. Louie, however spelled, is preferable.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/06/2022 01:33

Jude - less overused and less fussy

But if you do use Louis please spell it properly, Louie is appalling

mathanxiety · 02/06/2022 01:34

Jude.

You shouldn't ruin Louis just because some people are ignorant.

tenjishut · 02/06/2022 02:00

I don't understand the difficulty with the Louis spelling.

Prince Louis
Louis Vuitton
All the King Louis's in France.

tenjishut · 02/06/2022 02:01

Like Louis & Jude

tenjishut · 02/06/2022 02:02

Louis is generally pronounced Lou-is outside of France.

Since when?

mathanxiety · 02/06/2022 04:33

Louis is generally pronounced Lou-is outside of France.

Nope.

Fivebeanchilli · 02/06/2022 10:03

Er no, even outside France most people know how to pronounce Louis correctly.

Trafficjamlog · 02/06/2022 10:10

Louis.

there will be no problem with people pronouncing it. Can’t abide louie

They do...or should.

SundayTeatime · 02/06/2022 10:35

It’s Louis. Louie is ridiculous, a girl’s name at best. I like Jude, though.

pinklavenders · 02/06/2022 10:58

I think the almost 1500 baby boys born per year over the past few years will disagree that Louie is a girls name. Louie is more popular than Louis for boys in the UK

Not a single girl was called Louie...!
