Louis.

Jude reminds me of the yellow stars Jews had to wear.

PostMenPatWithACat · 02/06/2022 12:46

Any name for any child shoukd be spelled correctly. Naming a child Louie instead of Louis is on a par with naming a girl Joolie instead of Julie.

As others have said Jude makes me think of Jude the Obscure and it's a sad tale.

He may not thank you for Louie when he's grown up op and has had to take on board numerous comments about the incorrect spelling of his name.

pinklavenders · 02/06/2022 13:05

They're practically neck-and-neck, there's very little in it. There were only 18 more babies registered as Louie.

Names evolve and in a few years Louie may be the standard version used in the UK.

It will certainly be easier to teach that spelling to a young boy. Only in French would the S not be pronounced normally.

I don't think that will happen.

Plus, a few years would be extremely unlikely, if you look at the general movement of names within the stats and their movements and the time that takes.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/06/2022 13:18

It's more likely to be like Deborah and Debra, where Debra is very dated but Deborah is a classic

stacestation · 02/06/2022 13:27

Agree @DuchessOfSausage Deborah has remained the classic.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/06/2022 13:36

Someone I know has a Jorja. I wince when I see it written down.

Louis could always be Louie as a nn, if spelling is an issue e.g. living in Missouri.

Cuckoo48 · 02/06/2022 13:42

Definitely Jude. It's a simple strong name along the lines of Jack, Josh and Jake but less commonly used.

Don't love Louis as a name anyway, but there's nothing to hate. However I really dislike it spelt as Louie. I get your reasoning but you asked for mine.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 02/06/2022 13:44

Hate Jude, plus it is everywhere atm.
Louis is nice. Not Louie though!

RobynNora · 02/06/2022 13:50

Love both.

Both very popular names but popular for good reason.

chairbae · 02/06/2022 13:53

Names evolve and in a few years Louie may be the standard version used in the UK.

That's takes decades & with the likes of Prince Louis I would argue it will go the other way.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/06/2022 13:57

Aren't the Cambridge children Jorj, Sharlot and Luey?

Trinacham · 02/06/2022 14:08

I used to know a Louis who 'changed' (didn't officially change it but introduced himself) to Lewis, as he said so many people mistakenly called him Lewis. It did surprise me at the time that many people get it wrong but seeing this thread makes me believe it's not that uncommon!

Trinacham · 02/06/2022 14:09

Jude was our second choice for our son born this year but I was put off by how popular it is becoming (especially as someone I know got there first!)

locak · 02/06/2022 14:18

That doesn't make sense as you learn your name as it is & it doesn't register how difficult it is. Plus it's a French name so of course that's the normal pronunciation. Same with lots of names & words that are French in origin.

locak · 02/06/2022 14:22

You could spell Siobhan Shivawn if you want but it's a bit odd to argue that the latter spelling is how it should be spelt because we don't have the bh v sound but it's Irish name not an English one.

Theoldwoman · 02/06/2022 14:38

Louis.
No particular reason.

SundayTeatime · 02/06/2022 14:57

Jude is a saint’s name, one of the 12 Apostles. It’s ancient. The fact that it means something else in another random language is irrelevant.

butterflyflutterby123 · 02/06/2022 15:02

Another bite for jude. But Louis is lovely too. Cant go wrong

pinklavenders · 02/06/2022 15:32

Between Jude and Louie, I vote Louie!

mathanxiety · 02/06/2022 17:53

I have never once met a NT child who had any difficulty spelling his or her own name. Not a single one, including myself approximately 53 years ago, even though I have an Irish name and at the age of three I didn't know a word of Irish.

Honestly, how do you think all the Aoifes and Niamhs and Siobhans up and down the length and breadth of England manage?

And children with surnames like Wright?

obsessedwithsleep · 02/06/2022 18:00

Prefer Louie. The only Jude is know I shorten to Judy without really thinking and I don't think Judy is a good name for a boy!!

Newbubs · 08/06/2022 09:07

Thanks everyone for comments
but now i am actually off both names 🤣 others i like

Daniel
Georgie
Toby
Jack
Lex

Trinacham · 08/06/2022 09:09

I'd choose Daniel or Jack

missdemeanors · 08/06/2022 09:16

Honestly I'm sure most people know how to pronounce Louis and don't need an alternative spelling to help them, as if we're all still learning phonics!

Both Jude and Louis are lovely names.

From your latest list, I like Daniel best, with Jack second. I know too many Toby dogs to use it on a child! Georgie sounds like a a nursery rhyme nickname and Lex is just odd, like someone saying Alex without the first syllable
