Kai means food where I come from. It’s a hard no - boy or girl.

Where I live all the Kais are asbo-awarded young thugs. So to my ears it gives a really bad impression.

It means lots of things in lots of different languages, I chose it for the Hawaiian meaning "sea".
I think it would be OK for a girl but be prepared for everyone to think she's a boy before they meet her.

Kai as a stand-alone name is used for both boys and girls in Hawaiian. Can also be used as a shortening of Kailani as a previous poster mentioned (and which is traditionally feminine), or for Kaimana, Kainoa, and Kaipo which are all more or less unisex.

It was popular a few years ago for boys. It's not now. Don't call a girl that name.

I think Khai (pronounced Kai) is the name of Gigi Hadid's daughter, so it's not unheard of for a girl.

I prefer it for a girl just because I'm a teacher who's taught a lot of Kai boys who were... characterful.
