Clio - are car comments really a problem?

Clio as an alternative to cleo came up on another thread I started. It’s really growing on me but how much of a problem would the car thing be? Any clios out there? Or anyone with a dd clio? Any clios you know?

The first thing I thought of was the car. I’ve never seen the name Clio on a person, only Cleo.

HappyHappyHermit · 19/05/2022 14:14

I think Clio definitely makes me think of the car, I've only seen the name spelt as Cleo, which I think looks better and personally much prefer.

AmbushedByCake · 19/05/2022 14:14

BIL has a DD,.now a teenager, who has a car name. It was a car name then and its a car name now and it will always be a car name. Don't do it.

nearlyspringyay · 19/05/2022 14:15

Car.

Trinacham · 19/05/2022 14:16

Don't know any but I wouldn't. I immediately thought of the car, but that may be because it is also the only care I've ever owned!

AlisonDonut · 19/05/2022 14:16

Well, i assumed this was a car thread as i never go into baby name threads so...yes.

rnsaslkih · 19/05/2022 14:16

Yes because Clio is a car and Cleo is a person

aSofaNearYou · 19/05/2022 14:16

Why not just call them Cleo?

Trinacham · 19/05/2022 14:16

Car*

toastofthetown · 19/05/2022 14:19

I don’t think the car connection is an issue and I prefer Clio to Cleo. But then I was one of the posters on the other thread suggesting Clio! Might be worth noting that I have next to no interest in cars though, so it really doesn’t take much for me to override a car connection. There have been around ten babies a year called Clio recently, so clearly the name is useable.

HSKAT · 19/05/2022 14:20

Why not just Cleo?

MinglingFlamingo · 19/05/2022 14:30

Clio = car
Cleo = lovely name for a girl

bloominglovelyorange · 19/05/2022 15:47

Cleo is such a lovely name. I'd stick with that spelling

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/05/2022 15:51

Agree with PPs, Cleo is a lovely name for a baby, Clio is a car.

Luluuuuuuuuuu85 · 19/05/2022 15:53

Clio is a name in its own right, it's greek. I like it, dh vetoed it because of the car though...

JimmyShoo · 19/05/2022 15:55

Aside from the car link which you can’t escape, I would make the assumption you’d heard Cleo but didn’t know how to spell it.

ElenaSt · 19/05/2022 15:59

Cleo is lovely.

Clio is naff.

Johnnysgirl · 19/05/2022 16:03

It's spelt Cleo. You're already assuming people will make the connection with the car, why would you even consider spelling it that way?!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/05/2022 16:05

ElenaSt · 19/05/2022 15:59

Cleo is lovely.

Clio is naff.

I suppose Cleo is originally from cleopatra (meaning glory of her father) whereas Clio was the Greek Muse of history. Tbh I'd have said the latter was lovelier.

But the car connection has spoilt it.

toastofthetown · 19/05/2022 16:09

I find it strange so many people are saying Cleo is a name, Clio is a car. Octavia is a car. Mercedes is a car. They are also names.

And if something thinks that Clio is a misspelling then that’s on them. It’s not a reason to avoid a (correctly spelled) name.

anniegun · 19/05/2022 16:10

Why would you name a child after a car?

DogsAndGin · 19/05/2022 16:17

It’s a car.

Suprima · 19/05/2022 16:23

Clio is one of the muses to me, not a car. The car is named after the muse.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/05/2022 16:25

Yes, but as this thread unfortunately proves, a lot of people don't know that.

SoManyTshirts · 19/05/2022 16:28

Car. I’ve never met a person called Clio, but I once met a woman called Cortina. It’s stuck in mind for over 30 years - she said it was a ‘location of conception name’. (reference The Likely Lads, for any other elderly mnetters)
