Expecting another girl in June. Already have an Alice. Keep coming back to Maggie but can't work out if I love it or not!

Love it.

Could be a diminutive of
Magda
Margaret
If you wanted something more formal?

Rainbowqueeen · 22/03/2022 07:09

I do!!

Works for all ages, easy to spell and not ridiculously popular

ReeseWitherfork · 22/03/2022 07:13

I do! DS would have been a Maggie.

FinnRussell · 22/03/2022 07:41

I love it, if I had another girl it would be on the short list

Shipshake · 22/03/2022 08:58

I love your choice of Alice for your first daughter.
With Maggie I just think Thatcher, the chances are a girl growing up in the 2020"s and 30"s will.not thank you.

Onlyhonest · 22/03/2022 09:04

I don’t like it at all sorry.

DoWhatYouLike · 22/03/2022 09:23

My nephew has got twins named Maggie and Alice!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/03/2022 09:23

Awful.

Wrinklepicker · 22/03/2022 09:24

Totally ruined by Thatcher for me, I'm afraid

Why would a girl born now be miffed about it, they won't remember Margaret Thatcher?

I think far more people will associate the name with some lovely songs if anything, and once your dd is here then they will associate the name with her.

I like it because it's unusual without being too crazy, and also because I once met a really nice Maggie

Gonnagetgoing · 22/03/2022 09:31

I’d probably call her Margaret, Magda or a name that can be shortened to Maggie.

Sailorsusan · 22/03/2022 09:36

I like the name which is sweet. I would think of Thatcher but I was brought up in the 80s. That said, I also think Churchill when I hear the name Winston.

Mainly though, I personally don't think it goes with Alice. Margot would. Just my opinion.

babynamelover · 22/03/2022 09:39

Lovely as a nn for Margaret or Magdalene/Magdalena..

lollipopsandrainbows · 22/03/2022 09:41

I know two baby Maggies. I was born in the 80s and never thought "ooh, like thatcher?!". It just suits both of them, and I think it'll become quite popular.

ka147 · 22/03/2022 09:44

I love it but I know my parents would have hated it

Funnily enough Margot is also on our list so interesting you think that!

The Thatcher association has popped up. Feels like it might be a bit of marmite name.

I don't think of Thatcher. I conjure up Maggie Gylenhall. Rather more cool Grin

@SouthOfFrance young people today are very aware of Thatcher. More so in recent years because of section 28 along with many more of her aborant policies.

Possibly those who supported Thatcher or have no issues with her polices won't have a issue with the name.

SouthOfFrance · 22/03/2022 10:07

Obviously I didn't mean they won't have heard of her at all, just it won't be the first thought of people of that generation. Remember, by the time a child born now is 20 the 1980s will be 60 years ago.

Pemba · 22/03/2022 10:13

Thatcher aside, it's a very harsh sounding name, it's that 'Ag' sound. Sounds a bit like maggot too. If you must do it, at least give her a full name on her birth certificate, eg Margaret or Margot.

It's a shame though imo, when Alice is such a beautiful name.

Sailorsusan · 22/03/2022 10:53

Hmm, I agree that people will definitely have heard of Maggie Thatcher in many years to come unlike other prime ministers.

I also think Gyllenhaal (as well as Thatcher!) but Margot is definitely prettier/more classic. Why not Margot nn Maggie for family and close friends?

zoopigi · 22/03/2022 10:57

As long as your last name isn't Simpson, I guess you are fine :)

beetree1 · 22/03/2022 11:09

I love the name Maggie but I can't use because of my last name being Simpson haha

BennyTheWonderDog · 22/03/2022 11:12

Love it- makes me think of Maggie Tulliver (not sure whether that's a reference you want or not given everything!)

I don't think the next generation will have the Thatcher association.

irishfarmer · 22/03/2022 11:35

I like it, I think I would go with a longer name for the birth cert Margaret/ Marguerite/ Margot

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2022 14:01

I like it but as I remember the Thatcher years, I wouldn't use it. She stopped being PM 31 years ago, so the association won't mean much to your DD

We're on out 6th PM since her
