Expecting another girl in June. Already have an Alice. Keep coming back to Maggie but can't work out if I love it or not!

OP posts:

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2022 14:02

I'm not keen on Margot.

Mountainbear · 22/03/2022 16:18

I like it, but would never use it - it just reminds me of Thatcher, sadly, and there's no way DH would ever agree to that! I like Marguerite a lot.

OnlyTwistyOnes · 22/03/2022 16:21

I know a lovely young Maggie. Only the one mind.

KobaniDaughters · 22/03/2022 16:24

My DD is a Maggie and it suits her hugely! It wasn’t my favourite choice but works for her and she gets very excited about the fact that Professor McGonegal is played by Maggie Smith and that Maggie Gyllenhal is nominated for double Oscars this year - there are a Lot of cool Maggie role models out there to offset thatcher

KobaniDaughters · 22/03/2022 16:25

Also it’s a known name but not common which is great, and I think it goes really well with Alice

RainingYetAgain · 22/03/2022 16:36

I'd also go for Margaret/Magda/Marguerite/Margot and let her choose her own shortened name. She might chose something else.
I know a Margaret who completely ignores anyone who tries to call her Maggie. One of my DS has adopted a different shortname to the one his DF and I used when he was small but by having a longer formal name , he had a choice.

TeaAndStrumpets · 22/03/2022 16:44

Peggy is also a diminutive of Margaret (as a rhyme for Meggie). I knew a few growing up.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 22/03/2022 19:11

Maggie Thatcher

Maggie Simpson

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 22/03/2022 19:59

"Possibly those who supported Thatcher or have no issues with her polices won't have a issue with the name."

Eh? Sometimes people just like a name, nobody is going to have an issue with a random woman called Maggie because of Thatcher's policies.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/03/2022 20:04

@Shipshake

I love your choice of Alice for your first daughter. With Maggie I just think Thatcher, the chances are a girl growing up in the 2020"s and 30"s will.not thank you.
The chances are a girl growing up in the 20s and 30s will never give M Thatcher a thought.

I sort of like it, it’s quite house-maid-y, I would call her Margaret or Marguerite as a full name so she can use that or Margot if she prefers

Or there is always Magdalena which is rather lovely

Happenchance · 22/03/2022 20:06

I don't like Maggie but quite like Agatha nn Aggie.

margegunderson · 22/03/2022 20:09

I loathed Thatcher (though in retrospect she was so much better than this lot) but it's a great name and I don't think most people will associate it with her. And names don't have to go with other names - siblings aren't a matching set but individuals.

Qwill · 22/03/2022 20:10

Maggie is a great name! My mum’s friend’s son is called Magnus and everyone calls him Maggie (he’s 28 now), and I’ve always thought it was such a cool name. I don’t get the reasoning that you need a ‘formal’ name. If you like it, just have that. Mags is also a cute nickname.

Blimecory · 22/03/2022 20:12

I like it, but would go for Margaret officially. I think of Maggie Tulliver from Mill on the Floss and Maggie from the Simpsons before I think of Margaret Thatcher.

IHateWasps · 22/03/2022 20:17

It's such a harsh and ugly name unlike Alice which is such a beautiful yet strong name. I'd feel rather shortchanged if my Sister was an Alice and I got stuck with Maggie.

LaQuern · 22/03/2022 20:23

I knew a Magali at Uni, always thought that was a nice name and could be shortened to Maggie

HomecomingKween · 22/03/2022 20:32

I like the name Maggie, way more than the ubiquitous Margot. And I think it's absolutely fine as a name in its own right. I definitely wouldn't be putting Margaret on the birth cert.

Thatcher was awful but didn't she hate that she was called Maggie by the tabloids? Makes me like the name even more.

PrancerandDancer · 22/03/2022 20:48

I have a Maggie!

We umm and ahhed about calling her Margot or Margaret but in the end just went for Maggie. I've met 2 more around similar age in the last 5 years.

Really suits her and glad I went for it now. Had mainly positive response to it!

KobaniDaughters · 22/03/2022 22:23

@PrancerandDancer snap - we went for Maggie as it is as I don’t like Margaret or Margot, they both sound so stuffy. I like that it’s feminine but has guts, as opposed to other names that end with the ee sound

DramaAlpaca · 22/03/2022 22:37

Maggie is very hard/harsh next to the beautiful, soft sounding Alice. It's quite an ugly name to me, as is Margot - but Margot goes better.

Sonata13 · 22/03/2022 22:41

I think it's cute. I know some older lovely Maggie's.

WeasilyPleased · 22/03/2022 22:41

I dislike all the Mag names. They just sound maggoty to me. Alice is beautiful.

MsTSwift · 22/03/2022 22:42

I really like it sounds fresh and original and would work on any age. Think enough time has passed since Margaret thatcher. The older ones I know are great fun life and soul of the party types so it has good associations.

MarmiteCoriander · 22/03/2022 22:49

I can't read Margot without reading Maggot! Can't stand it- sorry.
Would the name just be Maggie- or is that a nn?
Any others you like?

WetLookKnitwear · 22/03/2022 22:56

first reaction: maggot.

But I don’t think everyone will be thinking maggot or thatcher! You could say something negative about any name.

It is actually a v nice name.
