What are your thoughts on Ottilie?

I think it's kind of cute and not so popular.

Oh I like it!

TabithaHazel · 10/03/2022 18:59

I know 5 of them born in recent years, so think it is getting pretty popular. I actually prefer Ottoline, but it's a nice name :)

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2022 19:00

It's one of those names that looks very pretty on paper but really only sounds good if you happen to have a French accent. Ditto Amelie.

ISmellBurnings · 10/03/2022 19:01

It must be becoming popular because every other names thread mentions it (or it feels like that anyway).

Not a massive fan of it and can’t stand the wet Tilly as a nickname.

Butterbeerplease · 10/03/2022 19:03

I have an Ottilie so obviously think it’s great. Grin We shorten it to “Ottie” rather than “Tilly”.

Lampyshady · 10/03/2022 19:05

Becoming very popular, more so since YouTube couple used it. Sounds very twee and like it will date, really don’t like it personally

Purplestar148 · 10/03/2022 19:06

I really don’t like this name sorry. It’s also very trendy, I know quite a few born recently.

Fahrted · 10/03/2022 19:08

It is very popular at the moment. Or its mispronounced version is, at any rate (i.e. Otterly, which is a completely different name). Ottilie - as it should be said - is lovely, though.

firstimemamma · 10/03/2022 19:10

Not keen and it's very popular imo. 2 in my son's nursery class and I just keep hearing it in general.

estoybien · 10/03/2022 19:10

I don't like it. It doesn't look good written down and I dislike the possible shortenings.

Bagelsandbrie · 10/03/2022 19:11

Zoella and Alfie have used it so it’s becoming popular. Depends if that bothers you.

Snowbell99 · 10/03/2022 19:11

I didn't know about the youtube couple. It is a family name for me (well, Otto is on both sides and Ottilie is a variant).

It's just sort of perfect because Otto is a family name for both of us so Ottilie just feels like a great connection between our families.

It is definitely getting more popular but according to statistics it's out of the top 100 so not extremely common. At least not nearly as common as Olivia, Ava, Sophia etc.

Hm, maybe Ottoline is better? Do you say -LEEN? or -LINE? But Ottilie appeals to me more. Maybe as a middle name?

We wouldn't use a nickname I think as it's quite short.

Beautiful name...was on my list but I had boys!

Purplestar148 · 10/03/2022 19:21

If you like on darkergreener you can see how fast it’s risen in the charts recently. It’ll probably continue to rise well into the top 100 if it continues at its current rate! Also likely to date.

Purplestar148 · 10/03/2022 19:22

Look not like

Calandor · 10/03/2022 19:22

Love it. Always have. Also love Odette.

I think both still sound nice in a variety of British accents
DotDotDotDotDot · 10/03/2022 19:24

I’m not keen on this name, sorry. We’ll not the Otterly pronunciation anyway. Ottoline is nicer, seems less trendy.

Calandor · 10/03/2022 19:26

All names date except the 'dreaded' very popular ones that people try and avoid like Sophie, Olivia, Elizabeth etc which become somewhat timeless because they have now been so popular for decades (centuries in the case of Elizabeth)
Nomorefuckstogive · 10/03/2022 19:27

Very pretty, but trendy, so there may be loads in her class at school.

MadameFantabulosa · 10/03/2022 19:29

I have an Ottilie. She’s in her 20s. My family are German and it’s the name of a great aunt.

Purplestar148 · 10/03/2022 19:34

@Calandor true..but some date much worse than others! And from what I’ve seen that tends to be the trendy names that have appeared out of no where (and disappeared just as fast).
But I suppose how much does a dated name really matter.

Fahrted · 10/03/2022 19:36

@Calandor I'm not sure that Ammerly really works any better than Otterly...

vampirewellness · 10/03/2022 19:40

Hmm. I think it's fine, but I think it's become popular to the point of not being unusual, like Sarah/Louise in the 90s.

There were 2 Ottilies and 2 Otties at goddaughters 4th bday this year, plus an Otto.

And 4 Arlo's in their year group!

Snowbell99 · 10/03/2022 19:42

Yes, I also expect it to enter the top 100. I know it's rising quickly but at the moment it is still not extremely common and I don't think it will sound more dated than names like Ava, Emma, Ella, Eva or Olivia. It's not a Kayleigh (nothing against Kayleigh, I do like it, but it is a new name whereas Ottilie has decades of history).

We can never really know whether it will continue to rise like it did before or whether it will stay where it is or even fall. Too many things have an impact on this. The reason why it looks so drastic in the graph is because it went from hardly being used at all to being used quite a bit whereas names like Eva rose more slowly and gradually but Eva is still more common as of now.

In the end the popularity doesn't matter to me that much and I don't know where it will go. Miley, for example, rose like crazy at some point and then fell just as quickly. Luna went up really really quickly and I expected it to end up in the top 5 but for some reason it just stopped rising at some point and is now at #30-something and hasn't gone up further.

The youtube couple bothers me more. I never watched their videos but a youtuber I do watch reviewed her book once and it must have been pretty awful so I expect her channel to be one of those beauty/lifestyle/showing my child for clicks sort of thing but could be wrong. Nothing against her, just not something I care for.
