What are your thoughts on Ottilie?

I think it's kind of cute and not so popular.

@DramaAlpaca

It's one of those names that looks very pretty on paper but really only sounds good if you happen to have a French accent. Ditto Amelie.
This I don't like it
Favourodds · 13/03/2022 12:56

I'm a fan and would have considered it if there wasn't already a Tilly (Matilda) in the family.

Snowbell99 · 13/03/2022 13:09

I am not clearly set on using it actually.

What's with some people in this thread not being able to have proper discussions?

Just because I disagreed with the people who claimed it was mispronounced or a completely new name doesn't mean that I am not open to opinions. But when people state things that are not correct but they ignore any proof or comments and just ramble then I find that hateful and odd and it is not the same as sharing an opinion.

Many people have said that Ottilie is ugly and I never said anything against it. Because it is perfectly fine that they find it ugly. I also never said anything against people saying that it sounds like "utterly" or "otter" because if it does sound like that to them it is fine and I am grateful they are letting me know the associations they have with it.

But just writing "you are mispronouncing it hahaha you are so dumb" or something along those lines or "hahaha it is like Khaleesee-Royaltee everyone will think she is so old because it will sound so bad hahaha" even though lots of people have patiently explained that it is an old name (with proof) and that it is pronounced like that in French too is just so annoying and borders on bullying and trolling and I am just not having that.

No one has said it’s a new name or it’s like Kaleesee Royaltee? You keep bringing other names into it! It’s been pointed out it’s quickly risen up the charts and is very trendy..which it is! Honestly I’ve never seen anyone so defensive over a name. Just use it if you want.

DaffodilsPlus · 13/03/2022 13:15

It has become popular. It's puts me in mind of Freya twenty five years ago: just about to become on trend.
We have one in the extended family.

DaffodilsPlus · 13/03/2022 13:16

You may think it's a bit too used in a few years.

DaffodilsPlus · 13/03/2022 13:17

It's also got a sister to Aurora feel to me.

DaffodilsPlus · 13/03/2022 13:17

It's nice enough and if you love it go for it.

Snowbell99 · 13/03/2022 13:24

I understand, it was a random example as to the general tone of some of the answers here.

Yes, it's a trendy classic like Ava. But not in the top 100 as of yet.

People here are pretending like it's the #1 name in the country and as if it has no history and claiming that it will fall again as quickly as it rose even though we have no idea whether it will actually enter the top 100 at all and whether it will fall soon again or not.

It's these extreme exaggerations that are just meant to be hurtful that are annoying me.

I would have no problem with "I hate it and it's a trendy name to me". It's the tone of these people.

Again, no I am actually not. I am defensive in general in regards to many false statements, people making fun of it, belittling others and being extremely rude.

Ottilie is on my list but not my favourite as of now and will most likely be a middle name.

OP posts:
Snowbell99 · 13/03/2022 13:25

By the way this is directed at the posters who were extremely rude a few pages ago not at the ones who just wrote that it is trendy or that they dislike it or that they think it might get popular.

These were fine comments that were stating opinions. I am grateful for those and it is perfectly fine.

It is about the tone in some earlier posts.

No offence taken,☺️.

estoybien · 13/03/2022 13:37

I do not think there is any set way of knowing whether it will date or not. It depends how it is used in the future surely. I wouldn't use that as a reason not to use the name. Middle name seems like a good idea though.

ancientgran · 13/03/2022 13:41

I think it is a nice name but I've never met an Ottilie. The only Ottilie I've heard of is Ottilie Patterson the singer. Apparently she admired me in my pram once, my GM vague knew her as they lived only a few miles apart.

DaffodilsPlus · 13/03/2022 13:42

There a few little ones coming up.

DaffodilsPlus · 13/03/2022 13:42

There are a few ..

It's a bit odd to ask people's opinions of a name and then insist on having a 'discussion' (aka lecturing) everyone who says it's too common/will date/is pronounced wrong etc

It's a bit odd to claim a name is mispronounced repeatedly and be extremely rude about it when about five people have patiently given examples, proof and explanations that it is not.

But many people have said it IS mispronounced and disagree with you, and think you're mistaken. And they're entitled to their opinion (which you actively asked for)

movingsoon13 · 14/03/2022 03:01

@Snowbell99

I didn't know about the youtube couple. It is a family name for me (well, Otto is on both sides and Ottilie is a variant).

It's just sort of perfect because Otto is a family name for both of us so Ottilie just feels like a great connection between our families.

It is definitely getting more popular but according to statistics it's out of the top 100 so not extremely common. At least not nearly as common as Olivia, Ava, Sophia etc.

Hm, maybe Ottoline is better? Do you say -LEEN? or -LINE? But Ottilie appeals to me more. Maybe as a middle name?

We wouldn't use a nickname I think as it's quite short.

Zoella is super famous and named her daughter it, I love the name and have done for some time but prefer the nn which is ottie. I also love Faye, Emilie, Dovie, Zella, India and Pippa.
ringoutthebells · 14/03/2022 06:32

Surprised no one has mentioned another of Daughters / Father of daughters, who have an Ottilie too and used it first. I'd worry it's a bit influencer-y now with Zoella too.

I'm not mad keen on the sound of it, would be less worried about all the other concerns raised if I liked it.

Lulu1919 · 14/03/2022 06:46

It's very pretty and feminine

I know one ....I'm a teacher ...

It is not mispronounced.

Saying that it is isn't in opinion. It's like saying the capital of France is Berlin. It's just wrong.

timestheyarechanging · 14/03/2022 13:58

I like it but It seems to be the current 'Karen' or 'Sarah'. Also, I'd be concerned about people dropping the 'Ts' which I think would happen where I live - London

DogsAndGin · 15/03/2022 21:07

Love it. But it’s very ‘now’
