I appreciate this name isn't going to be for everyone and will get mixed reviews. Woody is becoming more accepted as a stand alone name now but I much prefer Woods.

Given River/s, Brook/s, Forrest etc are becoming popular. Do you think Woods can work?

It sounds like a surname, and an erection.

Marmelace · 05/03/2022 08:29

.

You are adding a lifetime of people laughing at you and then your poor poor child behind your/their back until they can change their name formally. Makes you look deranged. I think the plural is the real kick.

Mindymomo · 05/03/2022 08:38

My Son went to school with a boy called Forest, as soon as he could he changed it. His friends were fine with it, but he got so fed up with the jokes and explaining his name all the time.

cptartapp · 05/03/2022 08:40

Can't get past the link with erection.
Sorry, no.

Abraxan · 05/03/2022 08:40

I've taught a couple of boys called Windy, as their actual name.

But I don't think Woods worked. I think the fact that it's plural makes it not work. I've never known a person called rivers, wrens, daisies, etc. it's almost always only a singular noun. I'm not sure Wood works either ti be fair though.

KittenKong · 05/03/2022 08:41

What’s your name?
Woods
No your first name
Woods
No really
Woods!
Oh that’s that shirt for?
Woods!!!
Well you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to…

I’d have another think.

PuppyMonkey · 05/03/2022 08:45

Woods is silly but I really like Woodward or Elwood.

Staggersaurus · 05/03/2022 08:46

Oh come on, you must be pulling our leg. You can’t seriously be thinking it’s a good choice of name?

KittenKong · 05/03/2022 08:48

I’m hoping they the surname is something like McGraw or McConnerty. They’d sound like something out if a Hairy McLairy.

PumpkinCrumble · 05/03/2022 08:54

Names that start with Sylv or Silv have a forest/woodland meaning. So Sylvester, Silvio, etc. Which I admit is a very different proposition to Woods. Might be best going with Edward?

ThePennyJustDropped · 05/03/2022 09:44

Absolutely avoid if your surname is Brown.

Otherwise I agree with others that maybe giving a fuller name that can be known as Woods gives him the future choice if he hates it. The end s is quite common for nicknames among my DC friends I.e. William becomes Wills, Millie is Mills, Ruby is Rubes. So I'd go for Woodrow, Elwood or Edward. All strong names.

FayCarew · 05/03/2022 13:17

It's a surname and doesn't work as a first name

ladygindiva · 05/03/2022 13:18

It doesn't feel like a name to me. I like Forest though.

dizzydizzydizzy · 05/03/2022 13:19

@axolotlfloof

Why the plural? We seriously considered Woody for DS1, but remembered we were naming a person not a dog just in time. DS1 is a teenager and says his name (top 5 boys name for many years) is one of the few things we got right.

Don't name your poor child Woods.

Oh dear!
BiscuitLover3678 · 05/03/2022 13:20

Wood is a horrible euphemism for an erection and woody Allen has had some pretty horrific sexual allegations. So all that puts me of sadly!

Woods with an S may be ok, but it will take some time to get past those associations for me.

TopCatsTopHat · 05/03/2022 13:22

He'll have to say how name twice to everyone he meets cos it's the kind of name that sounds like you misheard someone. As in 'what's your name'... My name is Woods'... Bit of a pause... 'sorry not sure I caught that, what was that?'... 'its WOODS' ad infinitum all his life.

TopCatsTopHat · 05/03/2022 13:24

🤣🤣 Brilliant. In this case you must call him woods, he can always (and would want to) introduce himself by his full name every time. If he could perfect a texan drawl to go with it too that would be perfect.
Figgygal · 05/03/2022 13:36

Nope that doesnt work
In any way
Nope

Elspethelf · 06/03/2022 10:44

I’m in the States so that might give me a different perspective but I quite like it. I feel like short names ending in S are coming up. For example, Briggs and Banks. I also feel like I’m hearing more shorter versions of names. For example, Wild not Wilder.

goldenstar7 · 06/03/2022 13:58

I would be tempted to go for Forest/Forrest.

@elspethelf Wild?! As in, hello I'm wild. This is wild. Shall we go, wild? Are you wild?
EdithStourton · 06/03/2022 14:26

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/03/2022 14:28
