Woods

I appreciate this name isn't going to be for everyone and will get mixed reviews. Woody is becoming more accepted as a stand alone name now but I much prefer Woods.

Given River/s, Brook/s, Forrest etc are becoming popular. Do you think Woods can work?

I like it, but I am seeing some kind of 1930s jazzman in a white suit, with a snazzy surname. Woods Lafontaine on the saxophone.

Thicket :o

HomeHomeInTheRange · 04/03/2022 17:15

No.

JodieFoster1 · 04/03/2022 17:17

No.

GrendelsGrandma · 04/03/2022 17:19

It's very bad. What's wrong with actual names?

flowerbutt · 04/03/2022 17:19

As with all names, some will like it and others won't. Personally I really like it but ultimately only your opinion matters. Don't let others influence your decision. I didn't (my DD has an "unusual" / "trendy" name) and I don't regret it for one minute.

AlwaysLatte · 04/03/2022 17:21

Woods??

Sapphireskies · 04/03/2022 17:23

No way. Imagine the bullying the poor child would get.

PoleFairy · 04/03/2022 17:28

I do like Woods but personally prefer Woody. I have seen a few 'Brooks' who are boys and of course Hilary Duff has a little girl called 'Banks' so plural names are more popular. I wouldn't discount Woods based on people not liking the plural thing.

Haven't met a Rivers though.

MoonOnASpoon · 04/03/2022 17:32

OMG I would love to be called Banks! I do like unusual names though.

mouldycrew · 04/03/2022 17:41

Oh really don't. There are so many nice names find something similar. I liked the sound of Wren, but it's a bird and so I found a similar sounding actual name instead.

What about Edward ?

MoonOnASpoon · 04/03/2022 17:48

I liked the sound of Wren, but it's a bird

Eh? Wren is used as a name, so is Robin. Lots of totally normal names are also other things, e.g. Daisy, April, Faith etc.

deadlanguage · 04/03/2022 17:53

Banks sounds like the name of a butler! Poor child

DockOTheBay · 04/03/2022 17:57

@Erinyes

I think the fact that it’s a plural noun is the problem — people aren’t called Rivers, Brooks, Rowans etc.

And yes, it does also sound a bit ‘Woods, do send in Ponsonby Minor to me — he’s fagging for me this term.’

Yes I agree this is the problem. I'm trying to think of any name which is a plural noun and there aren't any. Daisy is a fine name, Daisies would be weird.

I also wouldn't go for a name so obviously nicknamed Woody because of a) toy story and b) slang for erection

Cloudsanddaffodils · 04/03/2022 18:00

It sounds like a name defining where the baby was conceived?

Lesperance · 04/03/2022 18:00

You would not call your child Forests, would you?
Woody is short for Woodrow, and giving short version of names has been going on for years, but Woods just doesn't work.

Ontopofthesunset · 04/03/2022 18:02

I realise people have different tastes and every name was new at some point, but with all the options in the world, traditional and modern names from all sorts of origins, why on earth would you call your daughter Banks? As in high street banks? Or 'she banks withs HSBC'? Or river banks? Earth banks? Or as in 'the plane banks as it approaches the runway'? I just can't think of any possible association with Banks that would make me think that of all the possible names that would be the one that would best suit my daughter.

KittenKong · 04/03/2022 18:05

Please don’t. Edward is the long version of woody isn’t it?

Just don’t. As someone who has a ‘proper’ name which I bloody hated (but the shortened version was even worse) it sucks to have a name that is ‘odd’ and I quite like my long name now (it’s quite grown up).

Lentilsandrice · 04/03/2022 18:06

No. Just no.

OldTinHat · 04/03/2022 18:07

No. Just no. But if you do, don't be upset when they change their name by deed poll as soon as they are able.

Kitkat151 · 04/03/2022 18:08

It’s a surname 🙄

Mumoftwoinprimary · 04/03/2022 18:09

The only Woody I know is really Edward.

Woods could also be a nickname for Edward so you could use Woods throughout his childhood but then he could choose to be Edward / Ed / Ted if he would prefer when older.

ofwarren · 04/03/2022 18:09

Good god no. Its dreadful.

NowEvenBetter · 04/03/2022 18:15

If you go down to the woods today you’ll sure have a big surprise

Viviennemary · 04/03/2022 18:19

Its up there with the daftest names ever.

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 04/03/2022 18:19

Please don’t.
