Gosh I'm surprised by some of those but they're clearly names of a certain generation or two. A lot strike me as being traditionally Scottish so maybe they're branching out more. I do know a toddler called Gordon though!

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 31/01/2022 16:10

My youngest’s middle name is on the ‘at risk’ list…to be fair it’s a family name that was used to remember an uncle who had died, so I wouldn’t have ordinarily picked it.

Lemonweightloss · 31/01/2022 16:11

Suzanne at a push.
I honestly could not choose any of the boy names!

TeaAndStrumpets · 31/01/2022 16:16

Gosh DH has two of the names on the at risk list, but he is rather old!

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 16:18

The shortened version of my name is on the extinct list but not my full name. My elder dd has a name usually from the generation before

TabithaHazel · 31/01/2022 16:24

From the extinct or soon to be extinct lists I quite like Pamela, Gail, Stuart and Cyril. But would use them as middle names not first ones! The rest I can see why they are no longer used!

Jellycatrabbit · 31/01/2022 16:25

Stuart was on my shortlist!

Hilary or Kirsty for a girl.

I'm surprised at both Iain and Kirsty, I would have thought they would have held firm in Scotland.

StellaOlivetti · 31/01/2022 16:25

I like Maud. I’d use it.

BlowDryRat · 31/01/2022 16:30

These are the surprises to me:

  • Hilary (although I'd spell it Hillary)
  • Kerry
  • Lindsey & variants
  • Suzanne
  • Iain
  • Stuart

I tried to revive Horace but got flamed on here Sad

BeefSupreme · 31/01/2022 16:31

I don't like any of the names tbh.
There were multiple Stuarts/Graemes/Iains/Gillians/Donalds/Kirstys at my school. They must have been the very last ones.

BeefSupreme · 31/01/2022 16:35

The link doesn't work. Is this the UK or just England? Because like pp I am surprised that some of the Scottish names have completely disappeared.

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 16:38

Does this work? It's
in lots of papers. Just says Office for national statistics I think.

I like Janet, Kirsty, Lorraine, Suzanne, Gordon and Howard. I think quite a few on the list will be usable in a decade or two - some of the names popular now are the unusable old man/woman names from my childhood (Elsie is one example that really surprised me).

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 16:44

Even if I wasn't picking from these lists I'd still choose Marian as a name I like. I think Marjorie is due a revival too. Pretty

OP posts:
TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 16:45

Stuart I think of as classic, but I couldn't pick it due to an ex of that name

I've always like Janet. I've never seen it as an old person's name as there was one in my year, plus I grew up on Janet and John books and they were kids!

Not on the list, but Hilary for a boy. I actually also really like Gary.
I love Marion, Carol and Diane.

Jellycatrabbit · 31/01/2022 16:57

Ah OK, if it is ONS data that will only be England and Wales. Scotland has a separate function. That makes more sense!

dollybird · 31/01/2022 17:01

I know a Graeme who is early thirties, and a friend's godson who's about 10 is called Donald. Graeme, and Donald's dad are Scottish

Christmas1988 · 31/01/2022 17:04

My niece is Mildred, Millie to her friends.

Caspianberg · 31/01/2022 17:05

I definitely know some toddlers with those names. Freda is pretty popular now. I know a 3 year old Leslie

I love Clifford. And if Ds had been a girl we would have used Susan. Does spelling make a difference? As Susan and Suzanne are basically the same

MrsTimRiggins · 31/01/2022 17:05

DS1 was due to be a Marian were he a little girl, so obviously I’d choose Marian!
Glen or Stuart for a boy.

PoodleKaboodle · 31/01/2022 17:15

I know a teenage Mandy.
All the boys names are awful except Dale but I prefer the spelling Dael.

35andThriving · 31/01/2022 17:17

I like Hilary, Pamela, Mildred, Marian, Carol(e), Shirley, Kerry and Dawn.

I also like Claude, Clifford, Stuart / Stewart, Clarence, Howard, Dale, Norman and Neville.
