I'd probably choose Marian for a girl. I also quite like Marjorie and Suzanne

For a boy I'd probably go with Dale

And for girls, the list includes Bertha, Beverley, Carol, Carole, Doreen, Gail, Gertrude, Gillian, Glenys, Glynis, Hilary, Jeanette, Jill, Kay, Kerry, Lesley, Lindsay, Lyndsey, Lynne, Lynsey, Mandy, Maureen, Muriel, Phyllis.

I thought Leigh was a female name, equivalent of Lee.

Anyway, I like Marion too, underused I think. I'm surprised about Stuart, I feel a know so many.

IHeartKingThistle · 31/01/2022 17:24

Jean is so cool.

RuthW · 31/01/2022 17:31

I'd definitely have Brenda as it's my mum's name.

I love Cyril and Howard.

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 17:32

I agree about Jean. I've also thought Joan was cool since I watched Mad Men.

Horace NN ace.

I’ve known several elderly Horace’s and thry have been universally amazing

Imyourvenus · 31/01/2022 17:33

Theres a good reason most of those aren't used.

GameofPhones · 31/01/2022 17:33

Glad to see that three of my favourite names - Martin, Garth, Roderick are neither extinct nor endangered. Yet I rarely hear them. Same for Dennis and Roy.

Dmsandfloatydress · 31/01/2022 17:34

Suzanna and Stuart I think. They are not a great selection

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 17:34

I remember a similar list being in the news a few years ago and dd1's name was on it then but isn't now, so there must be a few more now. At the time it was spoken of on this board as very dated but people seem to have softened towards it now and some people like it.

The only one I like is Doris, not sure I’d use it!

PuppyMonkey · 31/01/2022 17:37

I do like Jean, Pamela, Marjorie and Suzanne.

I’m not sure about the boys but… maybe Howard can stay?

greenteafiend · 31/01/2022 17:43

I think the invention of margerine has made Marjorie unusable--pity, as it's a pretty sounding name.

Jean, Lynne, Marian and Gwendolyn are lovely!

Janet will be back in 20 years. It has a really nice sound.

I wonder if Martin and Dennis will come back in at some point as they are saint names that have stood the test of time. Well Denis is

Pamela and Jeanette are both lovely. They sound like glam girls who'd have whizzed about the countryside in a sports car in the 1950s.

Not keen on any of the boys' names.

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 17:49

@Jellycatrabbit

Ah OK, if it is ONS data that will only be England and Wales. Scotland has a separate function. That makes more sense!
Good point. I wasn't sure if ONS was UK wide or not

I really liked Deborah for my last dd.

Procrastination4 · 31/01/2022 17:51

Oh dear! Two of my sisters’ names are on that list, as is mine. We ARE in our fifties though, which may explain it. Grin

There was a Pamela in Malory Towers. I love Daphne and Darrel as names from those books. Mary too.

I love Cora for a girl.

TrashyPanda · 31/01/2022 17:59

Extinct since 1994, are Graeme, Horace, Iain, Leigh, Melvyn, Nigel and Royston for boys

In 2020 alone there were 10 Ians and 5 Iains in Scotland. Not checked any further. So I’m guessing this information is not for the U.K.?

dollybird · 31/01/2022 18:11

@Christmas1988

My niece is Mildred, Millie to her friends.
My DD was at school with a Mildred. She's 18, so a couple of years younger than that. She was Mildred, not Millie though
Bibbitybobbityboo86 · 31/01/2022 18:16

Fanny- obviously I wouldn’t use it but I like it

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/01/2022 18:17

My DDs middle name is on the list (Jean). We nearly used it as her first name.
I was surprised that my other DDs middle name isn't on the list... apparently given to 13 babies in 2020. Its definitely not modern (honouring a relative). I always thought Jean was the more modern of the two names...

Marcipex · 31/01/2022 18:22

I like Horace, Iain, Lindsey, Hilary, Jill, Pamela and Kay.

Mimilamore · 31/01/2022 18:22

My youngest granddaughter is Gloria, I think of 40s film stars..,,
