I'd probably choose Marian for a girl. I also quite like Marjorie and Suzanne

For a boy I'd probably go with Dale

And for girls, the list includes Bertha, Beverley, Carol, Carole, Doreen, Gail, Gertrude, Gillian, Glenys, Glynis, Hilary, Jeanette, Jill, Kay, Kerry, Lesley, Lindsay, Lyndsey, Lynne, Lynsey, Mandy, Maureen, Muriel, Phyllis.

Love Iain spelled like that.

Rugged!

KedgeIsland · 31/01/2022 18:32

I know several Mauds under five — mildly hipster parents. One has a sister called Ursula.

I like Gwen, but Gwendolen or Gwendolyn rather than Gwendoline.

TheGratefulBread · 31/01/2022 18:33

Gwendoline for a girl.

For a boy, at a push, Cecil.

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 18:54

Is this in North London?

I've used Howard as a middle name.

Winchestercollege · 31/01/2022 19:00

I think I'd let them die a natural death. I did come on the thread full of gusto but those lists are dispiriting.

KedgeIsland · 31/01/2022 19:02

South London, actually — Sydenham — Devon and Durham, @TopsieGreenwood. The Ursula-Maud combo are in Devon.

headintheproverbial · 31/01/2022 19:04

I'm actually amazed that my name isn't there.

I'd probably go Iain for a boy. Need to look again at the girls but maybe Gwendoline.

Blubells · 31/01/2022 19:19

We like Diane and Cyril!

Blubells · 31/01/2022 19:19

Sorry I

gluenotsoup · 31/01/2022 19:32

If I was forced- Gwendoline and Iain

newrubylane · 31/01/2022 19:34

Some of those names will come back, I'm sure. I had Marion on my list when I was pregnant and would also consider Jean. The boys names appeal much less, to be honest.

caringcarer · 31/01/2022 19:42

Claude for a boy because that was my teddy bears name when I was a child after the man.who gave him to me. Claudie 🐻.

Svara · 31/01/2022 19:43

Geraldine and Trevor

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 31/01/2022 19:45

Jean / jeanie is cute.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 31/01/2022 19:46

Claude is also cute.

Claude & Jeanie Smile

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 31/01/2022 19:47

And Freda is awesome!

musicalfrog · 31/01/2022 19:54

Kerry and Leigh.

AnnieJessie · 31/01/2022 19:59

Graeme isn't extinct in Scotland, although it seems to be used as a middle name more often than a first name. It was on our middle name shortlist although we didn't use it.

In 2021 it was used twice as a first name in 2021 and over forty times as a middle name. Since becoming "extinct" in 1994 it seems to have been used well over a thousand times here. in Scotland.

My nephew has another of the "extinct" names as his middle name.

dollybird · 31/01/2022 20:06

@HoliHormonalTigerlilly

Claude is also cute.

Claude & Jeanie Smile

My dad's middle name is Claude after an uncle who died in the war. I don't think he likes it that much. He's mid seventies.
PatchworkElmer · 31/01/2022 20:12

Maud and Cecil.

dementedma · 31/01/2022 20:14

I love Beryl... but am in a minority.

Dd's boyfriend is Dale. Quite unusual

GameofPhones · 31/01/2022 20:15

The changes in name fashions are fascinating. I remember as a teenager giggling (with another girl) at the brand name Oris for watches.

We thought it sounded like Horace, and so hilarious! I still don't like it. I remember similar reactions in France to the name Victor.

tomyeggs · 31/01/2022 20:16

Freda is beautiful.

DaisyWaldron · 31/01/2022 20:24

I like both Claude and Maud, but obviously couldn't use them both, so I'd go for either Cecil or Clarence and Maud. And I'd pair Claude with Freda or Marlene.

Actually Freda and Marlene would be good for a pair of girls with Marlene pronounced like Marlene Dietrich.
