@AnnieJessie

Graeme isn't extinct in Scotland, although it seems to be used as a middle name more often than a first name. It was on our middle name shortlist although we didn't use it.

In 2021 it was used twice as a first name in 2021 and over forty times as a middle name. Since becoming "extinct" in 1994 it seems to have been used well over a thousand times here. in Scotland.

My nephew has another of the "extinct" names as his middle name.

Yes, it came up earlier in the thread that the news reports are based on ONS statistics which is Wales and England only not UK wide. I don't know what names are endangered in Scotland

We were considering Jean as a middle name after one of my grandmothers had we had a second girl, I would have considered it as a first given it's relative rarity now. I rather like Yvonne, too.

Boy's name, Horace is rather good, though I don't know how you shorten it! I quite like Howard too.

ShoesEverywhere · 31/01/2022 20:33

My daughter's name is on the list, my son would have been Clifford if he wasn't born just when the Cliff Richard scandal was in full swing, and my unborn child if female will have another name on the list.

I guess I really like extinct names Blush

PrivateParty · 31/01/2022 20:34

@PoodleKaboodle

I know a teenage Mandy. All the boys names are awful except Dale but I prefer the spelling Dael.
Dael?? Is that a spelling of Dale?? Never heard of it
onewednesdayindecember · 31/01/2022 20:38

Edna or Mildred for a girl. Cecil or Clarence for a boy

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 20:41

I've reported my thread to request Wales and England be added to the beginning of the title

EatingGreens · 31/01/2022 20:41

Freda, Jean, Jill and Pamela I quite like.

EatingGreens · 31/01/2022 20:42

Stuart is a lovely name.

woodhill · 31/01/2022 20:43

Stuart is still used in Scotland and I like it

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/01/2022 20:45

I like lots of those names, so I'd be spoilt for choice! I'd probably go for Geraldine and Donald - fine names both.

OnaBegonia · 31/01/2022 20:49

I doubt this is accurate, there are names 'extinct' that I know of people born after 94 that have these names.

MinglingFlamingo · 31/01/2022 20:52

I quite like Lyndsey & Amanda/Mandy nm and love Gwendoline

But I'm not sure on any of the boys names I'm afraid

LivMumsnet · 31/01/2022 20:52

We've edited that title for you now, @TopsieGreenwood, as requested! Hope that helps.

yourestandingonmyneck · 31/01/2022 20:54

I know two elderly, very posh sisters called Pamela and Jill. Love both names. I'd say they are in their 80s. I know of a few others with those names but nobody under 50.

The only other girls name in those lists that I like is Carolyn.

I know an 8 year old Stuart, which I quite like and I also like Horace.

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 20:54

Thanks Livmumsnet

I really like Lindsay and I think Pamela is pretty and could come back. Stuart is a classic, how can that be extinct? I also rather like Gary now that several decades have passed since its heyday.

TickerTocker · 31/01/2022 20:59

Leigh
Lynne
Dawn
Glenn
would be my choices from each list

rc22 · 31/01/2022 21:19

I'm sad about Beverley as that's the name of the town I'm originally from. It's understandable though...reasonably pretty as a place name but perhaps not as a name for a person!!

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 21:19

Stuart was on the endangered list rather than extinct. Maybe the list compiled from the ONS data is wrong though? Not sure www.google.com/amp/s/www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/once-popular-baby-names-now-22918988.amp

Glen and Gwendoline

Blinkingbatshit · 31/01/2022 21:31

Howard for a boy (I suggested it for ds, dh said no), Hilary for a girl.

MillieMoonbeam · 31/01/2022 21:36

I’d consider Stuart, Dale and Glenn if I were expecting a baby. I wouldn’t consider any of the girls names.

I had a dog called Trevor 🐶

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2022 21:50

I think Kay and Dawn are surprising and would actually match current trends well. May is hugely popular so why not Kay? Nature names are massive so why the dislike of Dawn to that extent?

Of the boys names i think only Clifford is really in the same kind of vein, and its interesting to see its one that has attracted a significant number of favourable comments on the thread.

I quite like Marjorie but I think it suffers from being the frumpy older sister of the likes of Marguerite, which is why I think it won't make a comeback (that and The Simpsons)

Swearwolf · 31/01/2022 22:40

@Caspianberg

I definitely know some toddlers with those names. Freda is pretty popular now. I know a 3 year old Leslie

I love Clifford. And if Ds had been a girl we would have used Susan. Does spelling make a difference? As Susan and Suzanne are basically the same

As a Suzanne I can tell you they most certainly are not!!! Getting called Susan drives me mad. It's not the same name!
AmandaMirandaPanda · 01/02/2022 01:18

I think some of these are variable as there are multiple spellings and short/long forms. For example I know three Kirstys under 10 (albeit all Scottish, so I know that data's not included) but only one of them is "officially" Kirsty (the others are Kirsten and Christina). Also know a little Jeanne, Maude, and Frida (different spellings from the names on this list). Oh, and a toddler Síle (pronounced much like Sheila, but Irish spelling). And while my Aunt Mirren is really a Marian (after her own grandmother Marian aka Mirren) my cousin cut the red tape and just named her baby Mirren.

Using these names as-is, though - I love Janet and quite like Diane and Muriel. Not crazy about the boys; guess it would have to be Iain although I kind of like Clarence. Friends recently had Howard on their shortlist (family surname) but ended up using it as a middle.
