I'd probably choose Marian for a girl. I also quite like Marjorie and Suzanne

For a boy I'd probably go with Dale

Extinct since 1994, are Graeme, Horace, Iain, Leigh, Melvyn, Nigel and Royston for boys.

And for girls, the list includes Bertha, Beverley, Carol, Carole, Doreen, Gail, Gertrude, Gillian, Glenys, Glynis, Hilary, Jeanette, Jill, Kay, Kerry, Lesley, Lindsay, Lyndsey, Lynne, Lynsey, Mandy, Maureen, Muriel, Phyllis.

The at-risk names for girls were Annette, Beryl, Brenda, Carolyn, Cheryl, Dawn, Debbie, Debra, Denise, Diane, Donna, Doris, Edna, Freda, Geraldine, Gladys, Gwendoline, Hilda, Janet, Janice, Jean, Jordan, Kirsty, Lindsey, Lorraine, Lynda, Lynn, Marian, Marion, Marjorie, Marlene, Maud, Mildred, Norma, Pamela, Pauline, Sheila, Shirley, Suzanne, Thelma, Tracey, Tracy, Toni and Yvonne.

Boys

Has anyone mentioned Nancy or Judy?

Flutterflybutterby · 01/02/2022 04:40

Love Maud and Freda!

I'd not use any of the others.

Flutterflybutterby · 01/02/2022 04:40

Nancy is definitely not at risk! Massive surge in popularity recently, no?

YellowMonday · 01/02/2022 04:59

I actually really love Gertrude and Maud. I think it would be cruel to name a child either, but I'm planning to adopt a puppy in the next year and if the name fits will use Gertie.

elfran · 01/02/2022 06:59

@KedgeIsland

I know several Mauds under five — mildly hipster parents. One has a sister called Ursula.

I like Gwen, but Gwendolen or Gwendolyn rather than Gwendoline.

Ha! Maud and Ursula were both on our list- we went with Enid.

(One of my best friends just had a baby Maud, and we keep saying we need to meet someone with a baby Mildred and we'll have the main characters from the Worst Witch.)

In addition to those, I like several of these! Most notably Nigel for a boy, but everyone I mention it to is horrified. I'm not British so I think it must have a slightly different vibe to me. 😆

Ikeameatballs · 01/02/2022 07:11

I like Jean, Freda and Thelma for girls. I also like Suzanne but would prefer Susannah.

For boys I like Claud and Graham. I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a little Donald or Gordon. Interesting that Norman has fallen out of favour, I bet Roman is still popular.

RavenclawsRoar · 01/02/2022 07:38

I'd use Neville - I like the Harry Potter link Grin quite a few of the boy names are names of relatives so could use them as middle names quite easily. The same with the girls' list actually. I think Marian would be a nice first name - I don't know any and it sounds like a name that would suit all ages.

cherrypie66 · 01/02/2022 07:39

None of them they are going extinct for a reason they are all hideous

SprinkledGlitter · 01/02/2022 22:49

I have ALWAYS liked Neville.

InvalidCrumb · 01/02/2022 23:10

Edna was always a grandma to me but you know what, it's a marvellous name!

Caspianberg · 02/02/2022 12:24

Other ‘old’ names

Wynifred - it’s my grandmother’s name. I think Winnie is cute and Wyn works for a boy too. I almost used Wyn for Ds middle name.

Philomena

Valentine for a boy.

ladycarlotta · 02/02/2022 15:51

Was there some kind of a trend for rugged naturey Celtic-seeming names for boys in the middle of the century? I'd lump in names like Barry, Glen, Iain, Stuart, Dale, Dean, Leigh/Lee, Gordon, Graeme, Keith, even Clifford. So I don't think it's Scottish names per se dying out, just the unrepresentative craze for them.

ladycarlotta · 02/02/2022 15:53

I feel like Muriel and Beryl ought to be due a resurgence at some point - they've got a kind of romantic early 20th century vibe.

Personally I think, if forced, I'd choose Phyllis for a girl and Clarence or Claude for a boy. From the girls' at-risk list I really like Jean and Maud, but the boys' names are all pretty awful to my ear.

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 02/02/2022 15:54

@SprinkledGlitter

I have ALWAYS liked Neville.
Gary Neville's dad is called Neville Neville. His parents were clearly big fans of that name too.
SprinkledGlitter · 02/02/2022 20:38

Neville Neville is taking things too far!

woodhill · 02/02/2022 20:49

Magnus Magnuson

WeasilyPleased · 02/02/2022 22:34

Marjorie has a really pretty sound but I don't like Marge. Trevor is my dgd's name. Maybe as a middle but not first. God help you if you called him Trev Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 02/02/2022 22:45

Extinct: thing is some names carry on with alt saplings like Ian. There was a baby Ian in hospital in 2015. If forced, I'd pick Melvyn.

Extinct: Surprised so many versions of Lindsey are but again is it just cos there's multiple spellings. I'd probably pick Kay or Lynsey

At-risk: I'd pick Gwendoline, ,
All five of my aunts name are on the two lists, def named for a period of time

At risk: I reckon Cecil is due a revival

EishetChayil · 03/02/2022 19:48

Some of those are dreadful! Lesley!

BurntToastAgain · 03/02/2022 19:50

My name is on there. It should be extinct frankly. It’s a terrible name. What were my parents thinking?

VanillaAndOrange · 08/02/2022 21:53

Lindsey Jeanette and Stuart Iain. We did actually consider Stuart for DS1 who is now 25, and I still like it. I also wouldn't mind using Kerry or Kirsty, and I have a soft spot for Clarence, even though it is a bit "out there" - Clarence Clemons has a lot to answer for!

Laureatus · 08/02/2022 22:34

For a girl, Hilda. It's my middle name (after a relation) and I love it.

Mumofgirls2017 · 08/02/2022 22:36

Clarence
Roland
Kenneth
Graham
Gordon

Freda
Thelma
Thora
Minnie
Bridget
Angela
Dora
Phyllis

DockOTheBay · 08/02/2022 22:42

None, they're extinct for a reason!

If I HAD to choose some it would be Suzanne and Howard -Suzie and Howie
