Caroline or Charlotte?

Based on sound alone and not popularity or associations (if possible), which name do you prefer?

Caroline, I have an irrational dislike of Charlotte.

WhatDidISayAlan · 29/12/2021 21:56

I’m a Caroline and prefer that - although I’m biased! :-). I never get called Carol, 99% of people call me by my full name and that’s how I prefer it. My middle name is Bethan - think my mum picked two names which go together pretty well.

Devilmakes3 · 29/12/2021 21:58

Caroline is beautiful well due a return

unicornpower · 29/12/2021 21:59

I’m a Caroline and always hated my name as it always sounded old fashioned (I’m under 35!) but I like it now! I wish the nickname Carrie or Callie had been given to me though haha people sometimes insist on calling me Carolyn which really annoys me.

I do like Charlotte though and it was a contender for my baby. Out of loyalty to myself I’ll say Caroline haha

Caroline. Beautiful and under used.

EmmasMum12 · 29/12/2021 22:05

Caroline shortened to Caro

greenteafiend · 31/12/2021 14:44

Caroline, as long as you can ensure Carrie, Callie or Carlie as a NN somehow. Really don't like Carol.

greenteafiend · 31/12/2021 14:49

Queen Caroline in the 18th century (George II's wife) was quite a cool lady. She essentially was responsible for the cultural life at court and held her own among writers and philosophers. She was also the one who made the decision to have her children inoculated against smallpox--the first time this had ever happened in the British Royal Family. I like the idea of paying tribute to her in a year when we have all been so grateful for vaccines!

Everyone’s advice so far has been immensely helpful, thank you! Caroline looks to be the clear winner, which kind of surprises me, but it does hold its own against Charlotte in terms of beauty and strength, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised 🥰 And Charlotte has been overwhelmingly popular for a while, which may have dimmed its charms somewhat.

Charlotte. Lottie and Cherry are cute as nicknames

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/01/2022 18:48

@danascully96 - I'm not surprised Caroline is the winner. As long as the choices are similar style names with a long history of use and suit all ages/aren't too cutesy, Mumsnet peeps generally chose the less popular or overused option. I don't think you can go wrong with either though - I'd probably chose based on what nn's you like best/least as both might get shortened.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 02/01/2022 18:49

Charlotte

jackstini · 02/01/2022 18:51

Charlotte

I cannot hear Caroline without thinking "sweeeet Caroliiiine - ba ba ba!"

Fvw16 · 02/01/2022 18:57

Charlotte. But it is way common. I wish I liked Caroline more as I absolutely love the neil Diamond Song sweet Caroline and would totally name my daughter after it if I did like it more!

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 02/01/2022 19:02

Charlotte by a long way for me.

WhatDidISayAlan · 02/01/2022 19:41

Yep - as a Caroline I can confirm that I’ve been serenaded MANY times with that song 😄

sanityisamyth · 02/01/2022 20:05

Caroline is awful. Charlotte hands down!

strawberrymilk7 · 02/01/2022 20:10

Charlotte

schnubbins · 02/01/2022 20:18

I love Karolina (pronounced Karoleena)and it would have been one of the names I would have chosen if I had a daughter.Caroline is my very best friend so I love the name

What about Carlotta ? A mixture of both names and also beautiful

ThePoint678 · 02/01/2022 20:20

DarkCorner · 02/01/2022 20:23

Caroline is beautiful and I prefer the nickname options.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 02/01/2022 20:33

I'm Caroline, never been a Carrie or Carol or Caro (ergh!). I'm 38. Strange it's having a revival!!

Skeumorph · 02/01/2022 20:35

Both good!
