Based on sound alone and not popularity or associations (if possible), which name do you prefer?

Charlotte

As a big Charlotte Bronte fan I want to say Charlotte but I actually prefer the sound of Caroline. Both are elegant, classy options that suit all ages though (and both share the nn's Carrie and Callie).

Charlotte for sure. I just see Carol with Caroline. It's a but if a Sandra type name to my ears.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/12/2021 20:27

Caroline. Beautiful name, underused these days and there are lots of little Charlottes and Lotties now. Also 'Caro' is a great diminutive, if you like the choosing a nickname thing...

Charlotte

Caroline, very elegant, and not as ubiquitous as Charlotte.

Swirlywoo · 28/12/2021 20:39

I like both. There were several Carolines in my year at school. A few were called Caz... Or just Caroline. Never Carol but I know a Caroline who is Carrie to her friends.

Swirlywoo · 28/12/2021 20:40

I have never heard of a Charlotte with the nickname Carrie or Callie...

MadisonAvenue · 28/12/2021 21:04

Caroline is lovely, and Caro, Carrie or Callie make lovely nicknames.
I know a 10 year old Caroline who is wonderful and this association makes me love the name even more.

I love Charlotte more but I do quite like Caroline too. Whoever said Caroline Charlotte - although they flow quite nicely together, they are essentially the same name, so it doesn't really work for me meaning-wise.

Charlotte
The only downside is Lottie-I can’t bear that nickname

Charlotte. 100%

Twinkleylight · 28/12/2021 22:55

Caroline was popular in the 60s/70s so due a revival. I know a few Caroline's and Carolyn's and they late 40s and early 50s in age now. It's a lovely name and my Polish neighbour is called Carolina which is a gorgeous variation of the name.

johnstownflood · 28/12/2021 22:55

I'm a Caroline , my DF called me Caro, I was Carrie at school and a few people at work call me Caz. But on the whole it's the full eight letters, I do draw the line at Carol though !

KirstenBlest · 29/12/2021 09:14

Caroline could be Caro, Carrie, Cally, Carly or Carol for short

Charlotte could be Charlie or Lottie

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/12/2021 09:23

Caroline

They are both lovely, but Charlotte so popular people stop hearing it properly - she just becomes AnotherCharlotte
