Based on sound alone and not popularity or associations (if possible), which name do you prefer?

Caroline. Charlotte sounds a bit stuck-up ( Sorry anyone with that name. Charlie's nice of course.)

Charlotte

Charlotte
I really hate the name Caroline for some reason

Fifthtimelucky · 28/12/2021 18:11

My vote goes to Caroline. It's a lovely sounding name, I think.

I do like Charlotte too though and both names only have positive associations for me.

GreenClock · 28/12/2021 18:21

I really like both.

Caroline is a strong, stylish, classy name that’s due a revival, I know none under 35. Also, I like the nicknames Caro and Carrie slightly more than some of the nicknames for Charlotte (Charley and Lottie are attractive imo but Char and Charl aren’t).

I’m wondering if you’ve been watching And Just Like That, and have been subliminally influenced. We learned this week that Carrie Bradshaw Preston is a Caroline when an old pal of hers used that name.

brainflake · 28/12/2021 18:22

Charlotte purely because I like lottie or char.
Coralline is better than Caroline though

Not helpful, but I think they’re both lovely names!

Surprised at how much I like Caroline.

Don't like the nn Carol though! Carrie is cute.

Also do like Charlotte but think it is a bit plain compared to Caroline!

Definitely not Charlotte. It’s my name. I was the only one when I was at school, but now you can’t walk down the street for falling over 3 year old Charlottes, and it’s been like that for at least the last 10 years. It’s a surprisingly difficult name to pronounce too (depending on accent maybe). If you pronounce the t at the end, it sounds really posh, and if you replace it with a glottal stop (normal in the local accent when I was at school) it sounds very ‘common’. I’ve been a Charlie since I was 11 for this reason. Lottie is a horrible nickname on anyone over the age of 3. I’ve never heard it shortened to Char or Charl, but those would definitely annoy me. Have occasionally got Chaz, which is okay.

Caroline is lovely. My mum’s name. She shortens it to Caro, but I think Callie is nice too. She does sometimes get called Carol though, which makes her twitch.

Charlotte...it is completely timeless

Member589500 · 28/12/2021 18:49

Caroline. At this point in time it’s 1000% classier

WhatIsThisPlease · 28/12/2021 19:17

Charlotte. Much more elegant than Caroline.

Bushkin · 28/12/2021 19:34

Caroline, lovely and underused. There are so many Charlotte’s it’s got very dull

DappledOliveGroves · 28/12/2021 19:35

Definitely Caroline

KirstenBlest · 28/12/2021 19:37
