Amber or Emily?

I like both of these names but the only people I see with them nowadays are teenagers or 20 year olds. Am I being silly?

I like both! I think they're becoming more unique - but I'd go with amber, as Emily is like Emilia which is so popular!

golddustwomen · 19/12/2021 18:18

Love Amber!

MrsBudd · 19/12/2021 18:19

Amber although I'm biased as I have one 🥰

Rainbowqueeen · 19/12/2021 18:19

Amber

Gorgeous name

girlmom21 · 19/12/2021 18:19

I'd go for Emily out of the two

RedCandyApple · 19/12/2021 18:19

Amber

I prefer Emily over Amber but it's so popular here (central Scotland). There are 3 little girls called Emily in my dd class at nursery, she's 4. Her teacher (probably in her 30's) is also Called Emily. My husband wanted to call our daughter that name but it's just so, so popular here, so I said no.

We went for Emilia (it isn't popular around here) there's none in her nursery of nearly 100 kids. Names really do tend to vary in popularity by area.

Prefer Amber.

Lamont77 · 19/12/2021 18:23

Both nice! Slight preference for Emily but I knew loads at school and think it's still just as popular.

Lulu1919 · 19/12/2021 18:23

Amber.....I have a 28 year old one !!!

StrawScarecrow · 19/12/2021 18:24

I have a baby Emily and know lots of others under 5. It's the best name!

Amber is a lovely name too and more unusual. The Amber's I know both have red hair.

DemBonesDemBones · 19/12/2021 18:25

Amber is beautiful. Emily is nice enough but a bit plain.

MeatyRvita · 19/12/2021 18:26

Amber 100%
Nothing wrong with Emily but I find it a bit… blah

PrettyPollyOliver · 19/12/2021 18:31

Amber is lovely

Roselilly36 · 19/12/2021 18:46

I have only met one Amber, lots of Emily’s, but that’s good I love Emily too. Out of the two choices I would go with Amber, just as it’s much unusual, without being too out there.

Courtney1987x · 19/12/2021 18:47

Looks like amber is winning so far!😄I think that im leaning towards amber now because never got to the popularity that Emily got to 18 years ago so it won’t fall out of fashion as quickly would you agree?

I know of an Ember...

miltonj · 19/12/2021 18:52

Love Amber

SummaLuvin · 19/12/2021 18:58

Both feel a little dated to me, but they are nice, normal names, and almost all names will date to some extent. The only way to avoid it is choose a name that is used only a few times a year or a timeless name like Charlotte or William - but there are very few truly timeless names. So if you like them then use them.

For what it's worth I have never met a nice Amber.

boobot1 · 19/12/2021 19:03

Amber that was my choice if I'd had a girl.

I know a couple of Amber's older than that and think it's actually quite dated now, but think Emily's a classic 🙈

Most people disagree though so please ignore me. Especially as you seem to have a preference too Smile

Amber has dated more badly than Emily. Emily is a classic name which dropped out of the top 100 in England and Wales after 1924 and hasn't left since it reentered by 1974. It's the fifteenth most popular name at the moment so is unlikely to drop significantly again for at least another decade. That's several generations of Emilys which means that although it might drop in popularity again, there's not a single short period of time for it to date to.

Amber only entered the top hundred for the first time in the 90s and has been dropping steadily since it peaked in 1999. If it continues dropping like it has been it will be our of the top hundred in three or four years. It's already falling out of fashion at the moment. Here's the pattern of Amber's recent popularity if that interests you.

Amber, almost called our DD that, but it doesn't "fit" with our surname.

Bellafrenum · 19/12/2021 19:16

Emily, I think it is timeless and Amber is a bit dated

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/12/2021 19:17

I prefer Amber
