Our daughter is due on December 6th and we’ve decided to name her Alana. We will pronounce the name “Ah-lar-na”. I haven’t come across many people with this name so I just wanted to check.

OP posts:

The one I knew pronounced it as you've said.

Howshouldibehave · 16/10/2021 16:32

I would pronounce it Ah-lan-a.

MrsBungle · 16/10/2021 16:33

If pronounce it the same as Anna with an Al at the front.

MrsBungle · 16/10/2021 16:33

*I’d

ThePoisonousMushroom · 16/10/2021 16:34

I know a few (with various spellings) and all pronounce it how you do OP.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/10/2021 16:34

My friends wee girl is Alana, pronounced Ah-lan-a, ie as it is spelled. Why add in an -r sound?

ThroughThinkandThing · 16/10/2021 16:34

Come across a couple of people named Alannah. 50:50 Uh-laah-nuh and uh-lanna to rhyme with Anna.

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/10/2021 16:34

Same as MrsBungle. It might be an accent thing but be prepared to correct those going for a short middle a.

GemmaRuby · 16/10/2021 16:35

The one I know is pronounced a-lahna . With a short “al” at the beginning like the first syllable in Alan.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 16/10/2021 16:35

I know

An Alana
3 Alannahs
1 Alanna

Cominghome1230 · 16/10/2021 16:35

I would pronounce it the same as you would. Ah-lar-na

GoodnightGrandma · 16/10/2021 16:35

Al-are-na.

SE13Mummy · 16/10/2021 16:36

I know an Alana pr. uh-lar-nuh
An Alannah pr. al-an-uh
An Alanna pr. uh-lar-nuh

MydogWillow · 16/10/2021 16:37

A- larna

romdowa · 16/10/2021 16:39

It's an unusual spelling of the name alannah buts pronounced ah-lan-ah. It's an Irish name

girlmom21 · 16/10/2021 16:42

Why are you choosing to give your child a name you don't know how to pronounce? Surely you give a name that you like the sound of?

Redhotchilis · 16/10/2021 16:42

My DD had a friend called Ylana, pronounced a-lar-na. It's a beautiful name

SylvanasWindrunner · 16/10/2021 16:43

Never heard it with 'lar' in the middle, just a short 'la', but I'm in Scotland, so maybe it's an accent thing. Sounds a bit West Country when I try to replicate with the 'lar' so I'm guessing you don't pronounce the R and it's more of an extended 'a' sound like Al-ahhh-na?

MrsFin · 16/10/2021 16:43

It's it Irish? I thought it was the feminine form of Alan.
The one I know is Alanna pronounced Al-ann-a

WowStarsWow · 16/10/2021 16:44

Why would you pronounce Alana (one n) to rhyme with Anna or Alannah (two n’s), rather than Lana which would be Laaana, not Lanna? Confused
So I agree with you OP!

SylvanasWindrunner · 16/10/2021 16:44

In fact I imagine it's like how 'car' is said in non-Rhotic?

drainsdrains · 16/10/2021 16:45

I would pronounce it the same as you OP, but Scottish DH would probably say A - lan - a.

SylvanasWindrunner · 16/10/2021 16:47

I don't see the one N or two Ns as being any different in pronunciation just spelling. I'd pronounce both the same here. I think this must be an accent thing as I can't think of any other way to say Alana that doesn't involve me doing a terrible English accent Grin

Dora26 · 16/10/2021 16:48

Its an Irish name, usually spelt Alannah, and meaning “my child”. It is often heard as an endearment also. Pronounced in Ireland A-lanna

Margotshypotheticaldog · 16/10/2021 16:49

It's an Irish name, sort of a pet name Lovely child or lovely baby. No r sound in the middle in Irish pronunciation but I guess it depends where you are.
