Our daughter is due on December 6th and we’ve decided to name her Alana. We will pronounce the name “Ah-lar-na”. I haven’t come across many people with this name so I just wanted to check.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Twizbe · 16/10/2021 16:50

I loved this name as a child. After watching the girl from tomorrow I really wanted a daughter called Alana.

I'd say a-larn-a

UnfinishedBunting · 16/10/2021 16:52

😄 people with rhotic accents definitely should try to pronounce this as Al-ar-na. It's Alana, with the stress on the second syllable.

SenecaFallsRedux · 16/10/2021 16:53

The "r" doesn't work to elongate the "a" for us rhotic speakers, if that's what is meant by the "r" in there.

I would pronounce it A-laah-na (long/broad "a"), but I'm American; that's how all of the Alanas I know (about 4 of them) pronounce it.

SylvanasWindrunner · 16/10/2021 16:53

I think this is confusing for Rhotic speakers as we will pronounce the R so it would be lar with a hard R at the end which I doubt it how it's meant to be! Unless you're a pirate Grin

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/10/2021 16:58

People with rhotic accents? Does that mean common people?

Mebbe posh people should try to say it proper instead like Wink

OP you will meet a good few people who don’t pronounce it your preferred way. Be prepared for that, and if it will really press your buttons then maybe use it as a middle name instead.

Blubells · 16/10/2021 17:02

There's no R sound in Alana!

It's simply A lan a. As it's written.

Blubells · 16/10/2021 17:04

Never heard it with 'lar' in the middle

Me neither Hmm

Doublechins · 16/10/2021 17:08

I only know one and she is Al-ar-na

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 16/10/2021 17:12

It’s be pronounced how you plan to here too.

A-Lana

Katieandthekids · 16/10/2021 17:16

A friend with this name is Alan-a like the boys name with an a on the end

tabulahrasa · 16/10/2021 17:17

I’ve known lots... various spellings, but it’s always been a short a and rhymes with Anna.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 16/10/2021 17:17

@Purplecatshopaholic

My friends wee girl is Alana, pronounced Ah-lan-a, ie as it is spelled. Why add in an -r sound?
But in my accent (London) of you say it as its spelt it would be- Ay-lan-a rather than Ah-lan-a.

I'm a teacher and it is usually pronounced as the OP intends but I have also heard it as Ay-lan-a.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 16/10/2021 17:18

It was really popular where we used to live, we've moved now and I don't know so many, but I think people would pronounce it as you've suggested.

hotmeatymilk · 16/10/2021 17:19

My kingdom for MN to have an audio feature for pronunciation posts, particularly where “ar” vs “but there’s no R?”, rhotic vs non-rhotic words come into play.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 16/10/2021 17:19

Although I'd say OPs pronunciation is more lik- A-Lah-nah

Ginger1982 · 16/10/2021 17:20

There's no r so why would you add one?

cushioncovers · 16/10/2021 17:20

Ah larna

DamnitFanny · 16/10/2021 17:21

I know quite a few Alanas (and variations thereof). NONE have an ‘r’ sound in it.

HowardNoir · 16/10/2021 17:24

It's a lovely name, the only person I knew called Alana pronounced it uh-larn-uh. Unfortunately she was teased for what it spells backwords...

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/10/2021 17:25

In Ireland it's pronounced a-lanna. However it seems to be more common outside Ireland, and the A-lah-na form is accepted there.

emwithme · 16/10/2021 17:26

A as in apple
Lah as in a note to follow sew
Na as in napple.

Alana

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/10/2021 17:27

To all those worried about the "r", it would be one of those English ones that sounds like "h".

Redredwiney · 16/10/2021 17:30

I’ve met two Alanas and they’ve both pronounced it your way.

It’s an accent / regional thing as my Scottish husband would pronounce it that other way.

3catsandcounting · 16/10/2021 17:35

I'd say A-lah-na. The ones I've known have always pronounced it like that.
Banana - there's no 'r' in it, but we don't say ba-na-na, we say ba-nar-na.

Pinkginlover · 16/10/2021 17:36

I know an Alana ,pronounced Al-anna.
Not sure if the different pronunciations are regional.
