Final three girls names

ClaraBean · 14/10/2021 07:43

These are our final three girls names (I think!)
Shirley (my favourite)
Doris (dp fav) Dorrie for nn
Eileen

DP doesn't like 'frilly' names so can't get things l love like Cordelia, Sally or Ramona past him at all!!

I never used to see Shirley on a child, but when did was 4 (she's now 16) she demanded to be called Shirley for ages and I've adored it ever since!!

Opinion?

Come on Eileen came out several years before I was born and I know it off by heart Blush

Shirley and Pearl don't have the same vibe! Pearl is lovely! Shirley... Isn't. Names with a similar vibe to Pearl are:
Iris
Edith
Mabel
Alma
Dorothy
Winnie
Etc

AnyaMoondial · 14/10/2021 13:39

Oh I think Shirley is super cute.

viques · 14/10/2021 13:45

In a few years time there will be creative unique spellings of these names to make them stand out

Shurlee/ Shurleagh/ Shirleegh.

Dhoris / Dorys/Dhorees

Eyelean/ Ilean

Actually I rather like Dorys and Ilean......

neededafart · 14/10/2021 13:45

I'm sorry op. I think they are all hideous for a child

TuftyMarmoset · 14/10/2021 13:54

@EileenGC don't most people listen to the radio in the car? That will be how I first heard it, as a primary school child.

Twocrabs30 · 14/10/2021 14:14

I’m sorry, but I don’t like any of these names either. All 3 are fairly awful names.

If you are looking for something vintage, how about ‘Rose’

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/10/2021 14:25

I like Doris; same vibe as Edith, Joan and Nora in my mind all of which are very much back on trend.
Shirley is always associated with Anne Shirley for me which is a positive. It is pretty .I'm not sure about it.
I don't love Eileen but would use of there was a family association.

AnotherLauraLou · 14/10/2021 14:37

Sorry but they are all terrible.

Doris is awful, I can’t imagine some poor child having to introduce themselves as Doris. I would change my name.

There are some nice older names but those aren’t it. Love Pearl though.

MarshaBradyo · 14/10/2021 14:38

Really not keen on any

Lockdowndramaqueen · 14/10/2021 14:42

What about Dora?

ClaraBean · 14/10/2021 14:54

DP has just thrown Prunella into the mix. NN Pru

SO that makes four names on our list now.
Opinions on Prunella?
I have suggested Pandora and he is thinking about it!

For me my top two are Shirley or Prunella from the list of four names we agree on!

omfgimgettingmarried · 14/10/2021 14:57

Shirley is nice and goes with Pearl imo.

I like Dorrie but would use Dorothy rather than Dorris.

Really not keen on Eileen

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 14/10/2021 15:05

I think Valerie is the best that you have mentioned, but I’m not keen on any.

If you like older names then I think Mavis is doable and Enid is ok.

Elllicam · 14/10/2021 15:11

I think Shirley is really pretty, it reminds me of
Anne Shirley too. Not so keen on Doris but Dorrie is nice and Eileen does make me think Come On Eileen. What about Aileen? Then you have Ailie as a nick name.

Lovecatsanddogs · 14/10/2021 15:11

Pandora is better than the others you have mentioned.
I like Verity also?

Keiki · 14/10/2021 15:15

I wouldn't use Shirley due to the film quote from Airplane, Don't call me Shirley!

Mymapuddlington · 14/10/2021 15:18

Prunella? Are you or dp from a different culture?

All are very old lady and very harsh sounding, I can’t imagine any of them making a comeback really.
However it is your baby so your choice!

Katyppp · 14/10/2021 15:52

I do find it interesting how our ears become conditioned to certain names.
I absolutely guarantee that in 10 years time, posters will be describing these names as gorgeous and cute and all the other words used to describe names.
To me, mid-50s, Doris and Shirley are no different to any of the other 'vintage' names on-trend names now.
The fashionable names now are those of my grandma's generation, the ones the op wants are of my mum's generation. Both lots are in my living memory so both sound frankly ridiculous for babies.

TuftyMarmoset · 14/10/2021 16:10

Prunella is rather ugly - I wouldn't want to be associated with prunes myself. I like Prue though - what about Prudence?

Pandora isn't good either - too well known as a brand nowadays.

What about Dorothea, Priscilla, Fenella, Penelope, Polly?

MirandaBlu · 14/10/2021 16:22

Interesting, it looks like Doris fell out of favour the earliest and Shirley has been in the top 100 more recently (1974), at least for England & Wales. But they were all in the top 10 at one point or another.

I don't understand how Sally is "too frilly" but Prunella and Pandora are not. I quite like Dora nn Dori so maybe Pandora, although it could be awkward if she ends up being a troublemaker. All the Ps are reminding me of an old favourite, Perdita. Or maybe Petronella? Smile

Aileen Wuornos was the Netflix (and RL) serial killer, whoever mentioned her above.

quittingteacher · 14/10/2021 16:46

What about Dolores nn Dolly?

AnotherLauraLou · 14/10/2021 16:49

Still think Prunella is terrible, sorry OP. How about Penelope?
Felicity?
Thora?

Loopyluce88 · 14/10/2021 17:07

Gosh sorry OP, I don’t like those three names at all!

Pearl is lovely.

There’s an old thread here with suggestions for names for a sister for Pearl - some great ones on it:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/1808678-What-would-Pearls-sister-be-called

Loopyluce88 · 14/10/2021 17:08

@quittingteacher

What about Dolores nn Dolly?
Pearl and Dolly sound great together!
FedUpAtHomeTroels · 14/10/2021 17:21

I thought Dorrie was short for Doreen along with Reenie.

I don't really like any of them.
Dora is better I think Prunella is horrible.
