Final three girls names

These are our final three girls names (I think!)
Shirley (my favourite)
Doris (dp fav) Dorrie for nn
Eileen

DP doesn't like 'frilly' names so can't get things l love like Cordelia, Sally or Ramona past him at all!!

I never used to see Shirley on a child, but when did was 4 (she's now 16) she demanded to be called Shirley for ages and I've adored it ever since!!

Opinion?

Doris is cool. Aren't there a couple of celebrities with a dd called Doris? I don't like leen /Lyn names so not a fan of Eileen. Shirley is pretty.

BumbledBee · 14/10/2021 10:52

I'm coming round to Doris out of the three - I knew a Dorrie whose given name was Dorothy, which I prefer.

Queenie449 · 14/10/2021 10:53

What about Nancy?

TuftyMarmoset · 14/10/2021 11:01

Doris is comically bad. I would genuinely pity a child called Doris.
Don't like Shirley and I think the Temple association is too strong.
Eileen is the least bad, but she'll still have to put up with people singing Come on Eileen at her all the time.

EdgeOfACoin · 14/10/2021 11:02

BUT. All these people saying the child will have ‘Come on Eileen’ sung to them 100 times a day. How would other little kids know this song, unless it was their parents who made fun of the name first, by mentioning the song in front of their kids?

Exactly. In 2026, the five-year-olds in the playground are not going to be singing 'Come on Eileen'. I doubt even their parents (mainly born in the late 80s and early-mid 90s) will be very familiar with the song.

The names are ahead-of-the-curve retro. I think Doris will come back soonest - Shirley and Eileen strike me as names given to girls born in the 40s and 50s. Doris, I think, was around in the 20s and 30s? Plus Dorrie, Dori or Dora are more modern sounding nicknames.

TuftyMarmoset · 14/10/2021 11:03

Re kids knowing Come on Eileen - the song came out 13 years before I was born and I know it. It's a classic, famous song which is not infrequently on the radio.

Viviennemary · 14/10/2021 11:06

Not overkeen on any.

Doris is dreadful
Shirley grim
Eileen is just not a very attractive name but better than the other two

Enko · 14/10/2021 11:14

I actually like the name set i think Eileen is my favourite but yes the song.

I like Doris and Dorri

Less keen on using Shirley as it was your dds preferred name for a while but I see Shirley and I think Shirley Bassey a
Or Shirley Valentine I like both

Cas112 · 14/10/2021 11:30

I love Doris!

BlueJag · 14/10/2021 11:32

I'm sorry they are all grim.

123Applesauce456 · 14/10/2021 11:33

I like all of them. In particular Shirley. Had not heard of that in ages, but it's lovely!

MintyGreenDream · 14/10/2021 11:33

Dislike all of them sorry but wtf

EileenGC · 14/10/2021 11:59

I’d love to meet a primary school child or teenager who frequently listens to the radio. As far as I know, that song isn’t doing the rounds on TikTok right now.
JanFromLaMancha · 14/10/2021 12:02

No

SE13Mummy · 14/10/2021 12:05

Of your list, Shirley. I do think Sally is even better though and due a revival. I only know one Sally and she is absolutely not frilly!

user1493494961 · 14/10/2021 12:12

All dreadful, she won't thank you.

TataMamma · 14/10/2021 12:25

I think they are dreadful. Can't help thinking somebody is a fan of Shirley Temple or Doris Day. Eileen isn't as bad, but please don't take that as too much of a compliment in the circumstances.

TheNarwhalBalloon · 14/10/2021 12:27

I wasn't talking about kids singing the song Come on Eileen, it will be stupid adults trying to be funny! My son has a name with a far less obvious association and certain adults mention it allllllll the time. So tedious.

campion · 14/10/2021 12:27

Is this 1921 and I haven't noticed?
Shirley was a male name originally plus it reminds me of Airplane.
Doris is our name for BJ and that's not a compliment
Eileen? Well I've heard worse lately but no.

Whoever said these are names for 60 yr olds doesn't know any 60 year olds. More 80 - 100+ year olds.

Arthur, George, Edith, Violet and Mabel are back (to the horror of anyone over the age of 50.) Betsy and Betty are starting their upward rise.

Shirley, Doris and Eileen won't be long behind them.

Lovecatsanddogs · 14/10/2021 12:45

How about Ruby?

Lovecatsanddogs · 14/10/2021 12:52

or Esme?

Timeforwinterclothes · 14/10/2021 13:25

Doris. I knew a child with this name. It suited her. Dora is the same vibe.
