Final three girls names

ClaraBean · 14/10/2021 07:43

These are our final three girls names (I think!)
Shirley (my favourite)
Doris (dp fav) Dorrie for nn
Eileen

DP doesn't like 'frilly' names so can't get things l love like Cordelia, Sally or Ramona past him at all!!

I never used to see Shirley on a child, but when did was 4 (she's now 16) she demanded to be called Shirley for ages and I've adored it ever since!!

Opinion?

What about Ellen rather than Eileen?

Darceyhemingway · 14/10/2021 08:55

Sorry op but I really don't think it's fair to give a child any of these names. Have a look at Baby name lists from years ago like years and years I did that and some really lovely names came up

HHSchultz · 14/10/2021 08:57

Doris is quite nice, Shirley I think is dreadful, sorry.

Samzzz · 14/10/2021 09:01

Really sorry but all of those names are really not very nice at all and I think you're leaving her open to being bullied. Not trying to be horrible.
How about a name that is vintage but 'coming back?'- Mabel, Ivy, Opal, Ada, Ava, Florence, Lillian, Esther?

  • Out of your list I would change Doris to Dorothy and nn her Dornie which is SO cute! Imo.
Samzzz · 14/10/2021 09:01

* Sorry I meant nn Dottie **

ZimZamZoom · 14/10/2021 09:03

Shirley is the best out of your final three.

Doris doesn't suit a baby, a toddler, a young girl, a teenager or a young woman. Does Dorothy appeal? NN Dottie?

I know a young woman called Eileen and it's never not jarring to hear the name compared to her face. And she will always have some 'joker' singing the song at her.

ChikiTIKI · 14/10/2021 09:05

Lovely names. Would your husband consider Ramara? I know a lovely Ramara, her nickname is Romi.

ZimZamZoom · 14/10/2021 09:05

@Samzzz

* Sorry I meant nn Dottie **
Ha! Cross post :) We had Dottie on our short list after DH's much loved, late grandmother.
Hopeisallineed · 14/10/2021 09:07

My chickens are called this! 😂

Bimblybomeyelash · 14/10/2021 09:16

If you have a Pearl then you can’t really have a ‘Shirl’ too. And Doris is just Boris with a D. So that leaves Eileen.

Similar names to my ear are:
Mabel
Maud
Edith
Valerie
Mavis
Sylvia / Sylvie
Alison

ozzyfroggy · 14/10/2021 09:19

Eileen is quite nice, but I prefer Irene. Similar vibe but no song.

ClaraBean · 14/10/2021 09:19

@Bimblybomeyelash I did think of that, but I doubt she would get called Shirl, and also Pearl will be nearly 17 when this one is born so I won't be calling them in for supper together or anything!
I do actually love Valerie though. I'm going to text DP at work with it now 😁

Oh yes Dorothy is nice! What about the rest of the golden girls- Rose, Sophia or Blanche?!

celestebellman · 14/10/2021 09:23

Doris is awful - just not a pretty sound.

I think Shirley could be revived and might end up quite cool so would go for that.

Eileen is ok but she would constantly have people singing the song at her.

GoodnightGrandma · 14/10/2021 09:25

I went to school with a Dottie.
It was a while before we realised that her name was actually Dorothy, shuck she hated. She’d been named after her Nana.

GoodnightGrandma · 14/10/2021 09:25

*which she hated

Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 14/10/2021 09:52

Gosh. I HATE Doris and Eileen - Eileen especially, as it reminds me of that weird murderer who has a Netflix documentary about her - and as for Shirley... It's very dated. It's hard to imagine a Shirley under 50. I don't like it but hate it slightly less than the others (sorry).

Love Ramona though! Don't think Ramona is at all frilly? I think it's a strong name.

35andThriving · 14/10/2021 09:57

I've always liked the name Shirley even though it isn't used much anymore. I think it sounds nice.

Normandy144 · 14/10/2021 10:00

Sorry OP they're all awful names. They all sound like old women who work in a greasy spoon cafe and smoke cigarettes out the back door. There are other vintage names which have come back into fashion. I'd suggest Dorothy - Dottie for short could work?

Synchrony · 14/10/2021 10:01

I love Shirley, it makes me think of the gorgeous Shirley Jones.
I don't mind Doris. I think of Doris Day.
I hate Eileen. Makes me think of an unpleasant St Clares character.

BlueFlavour · 14/10/2021 10:02

Love Pearl and Valerie.

Not so sure on the others Smile
What about Gloria?
Magnificent name.

KirstenBlest · 14/10/2021 10:06

All of them are quite nice. Eileen is probably the nicest with Doris quite cool.

Shmithecat2 · 14/10/2021 10:07

I love Eileen.

EileenGC · 14/10/2021 10:16

Ignore my username as I’m not actually called Eileen in real life.

BUT. All these people saying the child will have ‘Come on Eileen’ sung to them 100 times a day. How would other little kids know this song, unless it was their parents who made fun of the name first, by mentioning the song in front of their kids?

Same goes for any name related to a song or film that kids born in 2021 will have absolutely no idea about. If we don’t perpetuate the mocking of certain names, kids won’t even pick up on them. Yes, name mocking will always happen but let’s not assume everyone will make fun of X name, simply because the older generations still can’t get past something released 40 or 50 years ago.

I really like Doris OP. Eileen is ok, what about the similar Aileen? I know a few Scottish (young) women with this name.

Helpimfalling · 14/10/2021 10:25

Now pearl that I love!

How about

Iris
Ettie
Mabel
Olive

If your thinking of old names

Etc

I get it you like what you like
