Predictions? (Not sure if this thread has been done yet?)

OP posts:

The only character called Roman I know of in a TV series is Roman Roy in Succession, played by Kieran Caulkin. It's a great show but I don't know how popular it is.
Ah! I haven't seen Succession yet but people who love it seem to really love it so maybe that Roman had had an impact.

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 13:14

There's Roman Kemp

Blubells · 18/10/2021 13:23

Indeed but like a previous poster and myself have said over multiple years those 5000 odd children soon add up and therefore it's surprising when you don't come across any at all.

Even baby names that are used 25 times per year add up and you run into others occasionally.

It also adds up over the years.

Classica · 18/10/2021 13:24

Yeah, Roman Kemp was the one I mentioned. But I wondered if there were more high profile Romans as I hadn't thought he had that much influence. But maybe he does.

MaverickDanger · 18/10/2021 13:28

I knew Arthur would be popular, I’ve run into a few in our neck of the woods and my midwife said she’d delivered loads last year. It’s the most popular name in our region.

DS’ name has slightly climbed, but he’s one of 120+ born last year. Our other options for him are about as equally as popular.

DM is a teacher and has never come across one in a 40 year career - out of her colleagues, one teacher has come across one. Although it’s a bit more popular in another part of the UK.

Really not surprised by Maeve, knew it would take off due to Sex Education. Has Daphne risen significantly? Might be more one for this year after Bridgerton.

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 13:29

A lot of names can be traced to a famous person - tv celebrity, film star, film character, pop star, royal baby etc

popcorndiva · 18/10/2021 13:32

Both Otis and Maeve going up I would put down to the TV series Sex Education as they are the two main characters

Lucy Mcklenburgh (sp?) Named her boy Roman around March 2020 so that might have influenced a few people. I am surprised Jaxon is above Jackson very odd.

Rosie has lept up as well

RubyReynolds64 · 18/10/2021 13:32

@MaverickDanger ‘The Boys’ has a Maeve in as well, the name has definitely seen more limelight recently.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 18/10/2021 13:34
@PinkWaferBiscuit, the ONS page does show regional data.

There's a map and it will give you the % for that region.

Somme names will be a lot more popular in some areas - for example, a welsh name like Efa or Jac might be more popular in Wales than in West Yorkshire, Ibrahim might be more popular in West Yorkshire than in Cornwall etc
Oww how didn I not know this? Thank you I'll go and have a nosey. Grin

MaverickDanger · 18/10/2021 13:39

@RubyReynolds64 ahh of course, we’ve watched that but not Sex Education!

I think it also fits nicely with the sounds of the popular Ava, Eva, Eve and even Grace, so sounds familiar but people think it’s more unusual than it is.

All I can think is Binchy Grin

bloominglovelyorange · 18/10/2021 13:39

@KirstenBlest @Classica
There's a famous YouTuber called Roman apparently and a few TOWIE cast members that have big Insta accounts have called their sons Roman.
Other than that I suppose Roman has just 'done an Arlo' and exploded. Everyone's picked the name for their babies at the same time - potentially thinking 'it's a bit different' but actually it's now top 30

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 13:56

IRL I know some who named their DS Noah thinking it might be a bit out there and were surprised when their DS went to nursery/reception

SueyF · 18/10/2021 19:18

I actually cannot believe the rise in Archie. I have not heard of a single one since Harry and Meghan. I thought they put everyone off it

Silversun83 · 18/10/2021 20:39

Yep, my DD's name in recent years has fluctuated between about 25 and 80 per year. There's one in her little brother's nursery room (which really really confused him to start with Grin) and another who left her school the year she joined!

Ugh, can’t view the full name sets on my phone. Can anyone look up Nina for me to see where it ranks now?

Nina is at no.145. In between Nova and Paisley!
bloominglovelyorange · 18/10/2021 21:17

@Hamnet

It's 145 - dark greener uses the official stats, see below:

Can anyone please link to the stats showing the full dataset for girls? Thank you!

popcorndiva · 18/10/2021 21:35

It's table 6 on the spreadsheet

BeKindBeYou · 19/10/2021 22:38

Been analysing these lists for days now - so interesting!

bloominglovelyorange · 19/10/2021 23:15

@BeKindBeYou same!

RandomCatGenerator · 20/10/2021 17:49

I’m being a bit dim: how do I see the info for a name that wasn’t in the top 100?

RandomCatGenerator · 20/10/2021 17:52

Never mind - found! names.darkgreener.com/

MooseBreath · 21/10/2021 00:20

Interesting! DS born in 2020 is one of three born with his name.
